Book excerpt: There is great social tension in the aftermath of ‘Tiananmen Square’, uncertainty about political and economic policy and the constant burden of over-population. Serious flooding of the Yellow River adds more than a hundred million to the ‘floating population’ of destitute and semi-destitute peasant refugees. In addition, the rapid development of the market economy, and other reforms, have led to the prosperity of some but not in all provinces. The bastion of conservative opposition to reform remains in the Army, especially among the old revolutionaries. An ambitious Lieutenant-General (Wang Feng), backed by the highest-ranking officer of the Army, now retired, who still wields immense, informal power, arranges for the assassination of the reformist Secretary General of the Communist Party who is also President of China. Seven of the rich southern provinces subsequently declare independence because the anti-reform, anti-commercial new government threatens their prosperity... Taiwan sees this as an opportunity to ‘re-conquer the mainland’, but Wang Feng orders a pre-emptive nuclear attack on Taipei... Members of the Taiwanese army then capture a nuclear missile base in south China and fire a missile at Beijing, which lands in Russia by mistake...

Book excerpt: A book for everyone who does business with China or in China. The history-making development of the Chinese economy has entered a new phase. China is moving aggressively from a strategy of imitation to one of innovation. Driven both by domestic needs and by global ambition, China is establishing itself at the forefront of technological innovation. Western businesses need to prepare for a tidal wave of innovation from China that is about to hit Western markets, and Chinese businesses need to understand the critical importance of innovation in their future. Experts George Yip and Bruce McKern explain this epic transformation and propose strategies for both Western and Chinese companies. This book is for everyone who does business with China or in China, or is interested in the development of the world's fastest-growing economy. Western CEOs can learn from Chinese companies and can create an effective innovation process in China, for China and the world. Chinese CEOs can benefit from understanding the strategies of their peers as they strive to enter foreign markets. And all Western businesses should prepare for disruption from their new competitors. Yip and McKern provide case studies of successful firms, outline ten ways in which the managerial and innovative capabilities of these firms differ from those of Western firms, and describe how multinationals doing business in China can become part of the Chinese ecosystem of new knowledge and technology. Yip and McKern argue that these innovation capabilities will be the basis for creating world-class products and services to meet the challenges of a new era of global competition.

Book Synopsis Tidal Wave by : Thomas McKelvey Cleaver

Download or read book Tidal Wave written by Thomas McKelvey Cleaver. This book was released on 2018-05-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now publishing in paperback, this is a vivid narrative history of the final stages of the Pacific War, as the US Navy began to slowly approach the Japanese Home Islands against fearsome opposition, notably from the suicidal Japanese airmen: the kamikaze. The United States Navy won such overwhelming victories in 1944 that, had the navy faced a different enemy, the war would have been over at the conclusion of the Battle of Leyte Gulf. However, in the moment of victory on 25 October 1944, the US Navy found itself confronting a frightening enemy that had been unimaginable until it appeared. The kamikaze, 'divine wind' in Japanese, was something Americans were totally unprepared for – a shocking violation of every belief held in the West. The attacks were terrifying. Regardless of the damage inflicted on an attacking aeroplane, there was no certainty of safety aboard the ship until that aeroplane was completely destroyed, as the crew of the USS St. Lo tragically learned. From best-selling author Thomas McKelvey Cleaver, Tidal Wave combines expert research and first-person accounts to tell the story of the naval campaigns in the Pacific from Leyte Gulf to the end of the war – a period in which the US Navy would fight harder for survival than ever before.
