(Classic Reprint) written by Henry Chapman. This book was released on 2017-10-28. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Collection of American Colonial and State Coins, United States Coins and Foreign Crowns, the Property of Clarence S. Bement, Esq. Mr. Clarence S. Bement has given me instructions to sell to the highest bidder at auction his collection of American Colonial, State and United States coins; also Foreign gold, silver and copper coins. He is a gentleman who spared no expense to procure as fine examples as possi ble, and at two of my great sales, the Earle and Baldwin collections, he made liberal purchases of many of the gems, so that the collector, in perusing the following pages, must at once be struck with the superlative condition of the coins. The cents are superb, and for one, the 1793 Liberty Cap, Mr. Bement paid me $500, the greatest price ever obtained for any U. S. Cent. The next highest price a U. S. Cent has ever brought was $37 5 for the wreath cent in the Sisson collection, sold by me on April 12 and 13, 1916, and of which Mr. Bement has an even more wonderful specimen, for his is bright red - original color. Collectors may feel sure of the coins meeting the descriptions in the catalogue, for I take great pains to carefully describe each item - not overrating - and if damaged or defective the fact has been mentioned; so bid all the lot is worth to you and you will not be disappointed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Coins of the United States, 1928 The scarcity of money in the colonies of N orth America, except the Spanish settlements in the Southwest, was a cause of constant distress, for not only was the incipient foreign commerce of the colonies greatly hampered thereby, but, what was even more annoying, the domestic trade was carried on with the greatest difficulty for the want of money, especially coins of small denominations. This made itself felt imme diately on the advent of prosperous conditions in the colonies early in the seventeenth century, and at no period for the ensuing two centuries was there any relief from the embarrassing question. In their endeavors to solve the problems of a standard of values and circulating medium the colonists resorted to nearly every means which had been known to primitive man prior to the invention of the coin. Among these make shifts, barter must have been the most common method of disposing of and procuring goods. The use of staple products as a means of express ing values and also as money in ordinary business transactions soon became of necessity a general practice throughout the colonies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Numismatic Society Exhibition of United States and Colonial Coins Catalogue: January Seventeenth to February Eighteenth, 1914 The term Colonial, as applied to the coinage, embraces more than the actual Colonial period. It includes coins struck both in the Colonies, and in England for use in the Colonies, also all coins and tokens issued after the Revolution, and before the establishment of the United States Mint in 1792, by authority of the Government, and of several of the states, and by individuals having no authority both in America and England. The earliest coins were issued in the Sommer Islands - now Ber muda - about 1616, and while the colony never became a part of the United States, these coins are usually included in the Colonial series.
