Book Synopsis Cancer of the Oral Cavity, Pharynx and Larynx by : Jesus E. Medina

Download or read book Cancer of the Oral Cavity, Pharynx and Larynx written by Jesus E. Medina. This book was released on 2016-08-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for residents and practitioners of otolaryngology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and maxiollofacial surgery, this book provides the reader with a comprehensive, concise discussion of the best evidence available on which to base clinical decisions needed when managing patients with squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx. Because of its accessible and practical format, this book is considerably different than other related titles on the market. Formatted with questions at the beginning of each chapter that are then answered with evidence and best practices available for each case, each chapter addresses situations the clinician is likely to face in the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of a patient with cancer of the head and neck. Most clinical decisions in the management of cancers of the head and neck region are based on the results of a few controlled, randomized clinical trial trials (Evidence Level I). However, most decision-making is based on the results of case-control studies (Evidence Level II), descriptive studies, reports of expert committees, or opinions of respected authorities (Evidence Level III). This information is scattered throughout the literature and often comingled with information about other topics. Therefore, there is a need for a publication in which the evidence pertinent to making decisions regarding a particular clinical problem is distilled from the literature and presented in a single concise, clinical, situation-driven source. Cancer of the Oral Cavity, Pharynx and Larynx: Evidence-Based Decision Making is just such a resource.

Book Synopsis Betel-quid and Areca-nut Chewing and Some Areca-nut-derived Nitrosamines by : IARC Working Group on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans

Download or read book Betel-quid and Areca-nut Chewing and Some Areca-nut-derived Nitrosamines written by IARC Working Group on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans. This book was released on 2004. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A working group of sixteen experts from seven countries re-evaluated the evidence of the carcinogenicity of betel-quid and areca-nut chewing and some areca-nut related nitrosamines. Betel-quid and areca-nut chewing are widely practised in many parts of Asia and in Asian-migrant communities elsewhere in the world. There are hundreds of millions of users worldwide. They evaluated betel quid with tobacco as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) on the basis of sufficient evidence of an increased risk of cancer of the oral cavity, pharynx and oesophagus. The working group reviewed epidemiological studies of human cancer, mainly studies from India, Pakistan and Taiwan (China). Studies on betel quid with tobacco and areca nut with tobacco in experimental animals now also provide sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity. The working group also evaluated betel quid without tobacco as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1), on the basis of sufficient evidence of an increased risk of oral cancer. Studies on betel quid without tobacco and areca nut without tobacco in experimental animals now also provide sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity. Areca nut, a common ingredient of betel quid and many different chewing preparations, including those available commercially, has been observed to cause oral submucous fibrosis

Book excerpt: In spite of great advance made by ENT and maxillofacial surgeons as well as radiotherapists to improve therapy of cancer of the oral cavity and oropharynx, it has not been possible in the past 4 decades to raise the chances of patient survival above 40%-45%. In this volume, the current status and results of therapeutic studies are presented by distinguished clinicians in the three disciplines. The book provides up-to-date information and encourages interdisciplinary cooperation.
