Download or read book Woodcraft (Legacy Edition) written by Nessmuk (George W. Sears). This book was released on 2019-09-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nessmuk - The Dean of the Outdoors Pick up your premium reprint Legacy Edition of Nessmuk's Woodcraft! In perhaps the best-known and best-selling book on camping of all-time, Nessmuk (George W. Sears) shares his vast knowledge of the wild ways and life outdoors. Finding solace in the woods from ill health in the city, Nessmuk found himself a solo canoe and traveled the American Adirondacks. Inspired by the natural beauty and the ability of nature to restore vitality, Nessmuk penned this oft-cited classic volume on camping, wilderness, and woodcraft skills. After collecting stories, tips, tidbits, and tricks of the outdoors, Nessmuk's first version of Woodcraft was published in 1884, representing the first well-known how-to manual for the outdoors. Perhaps Nessmuk's most famous line in this book inspires folks to get outside and enjoy nature's way of recharging our batteries: "We do not go out to the woods to rough it; we go to smooth it - we get it rough enough in town. But let us live the simple, natural life in the woods, and leave all frills behind." This Legacy Edition of Woodcraft is a facsimile reprint of the twelfth printing (1900). Its many printings have been consistently published throughout the 19th, 20th, and 21st Centuries. Enjoy this handbook by the Dean of the Outdoors - there's a ton of tricks and tips to glean from its pages! Book Synopsis Every Root an Anchor by : R. Bruce Allison

Download or read book Every Root an Anchor written by R. Bruce Allison. This book was released on 2005-04-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Every Root an Anchor, writer and arborist R. Bruce Allison celebrates Wisconsin's most significant, unusual, and historic trees. More than one hundred tales introduce us to trees across the state, some remarkable for their size or age, others for their intriguing histories. From magnificent elms to beloved pines to Frank Lloyd Wright's oaks, these trees are woven into our history, contributing to our sense of place. They are anchors for time-honored customs, manifestations of our ideals, and reminders of our lives' most significant events. For this updated edition, Allison revisits the trees' histories and tells us which of these unique landmarks are still standing. He sets forth an environmental message as well, reminding us to recognize our connectedness to trees and to manage our tree resources wisely. As early Wisconsin conservationist Increase Lapham said, "Tree histories increase our love of home and improve our hearts. They deserve to be told and remembered."

Book Synopsis More Readings From One Man's Wilderness by : John Branson

Download or read book More Readings From One Man's Wilderness written by John Branson. This book was released on 2012-02-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, many people have escaped to nature either permanently or temporarily to rest and recharge. Richard L. Proenneke, a modern-day Henry David Thoreau, is no exception. Proenneke built a cabin in Twin Lakes, Alaska in 1968 and began thirty years of personal growth, which he spent growing more connected to the wilderness in which he lived. This guide through Proenneke’s memories follows the journey that began with One Man’s Wilderness, which contains some of Proenneke’s journals. It continues the story and reflections of this mountain man and his time in Alaska. The editor, John Branson, was a longtime friend of Proenneke’s and a park historian. He takes care that Proenneke’s journals from 1974-1980 are kept exactly as the author wrote them. Branson’s footnotes give a background and a new understanding to the reader without detracting from Proenneke’s style. Anyone with an interest in conservation and genuine wilderness narratives will surely enjoy and treasure this book.
