Book excerpt: The Camp Washington Capsule project was made in September and October 2018. This project was commissioned by FotoFocus as part of the 2018 Biennial, in response to the theme of "The Archive." Eliza Gregory was invited to Wave Pool to complete this project, and she invited Gemma-Rose Turnbull to work with her. Turnbull came from Australia to complete the onsite work, and Gregory advised the project from Woodland, California.25 community members were interviewed over the period of residence. We focused on those people intentionally growing the place (through art, food, and other making) as well as those long-term residents extending their knowledge to newcomers. We had surveys in place at the gallery, and the questions were used as the loose basis of the interviews. Material was collected from sources like Facebook groups, which included posts and clippings, as well as from the people interviewed. Photographs were made by digital and film cameras, as well as cell phone. Surveys, articles, photographs, books, and other materials were scanned. The 480-page publication should be thought of as a catalogue of the available material. Which is available as a digital archive to be accessed and used as needed by future artists, as well as by the current and future community of Camp Washington.

Book excerpt: With a focus on socially engaged art practices in the twenty-first century, this book explores how artists use their creative practices to raise consciousness, form communities, create change, and bring forth social impact through new technologies and digital practices. Suzanne Lacy’s Foreword and section introduction authors Anne Balsamo, Harrell Fletcher, Natalie Loveless, Karen Moss, and Stephanie Rothenberg present twenty-five in-depth case studies by established and emerging contemporary artists including Kim Abeles, Christopher Blay, Joseph DeLappe, Mary Beth Heffernan, Chris Johnson, Rebekah Modrak, Praba Pilar, Tabita Rezaire, Sylvain Souklaye, and collaborators Victoria Vesna and Siddharth Ramakrishnan. Artists offer firsthand insight into how they activate methods used in socially engaged art projects from the twentieth century and incorporated new technologies to create twenty-first century, socially engaged, digital art practices. Works highlighted in this book span collaborative image-making, immersive experiences, telematic art, time machines, artificial intelligence, and physical computing. These reflective case studies reveal how the artists collaborate with participants and communities, and have found ways to expand, transform, reimagine, and create new platforms for meaningful exchange in both physical and virtual spaces. An invaluable resource for students and scholars of art, technology, and new media, as well as artists interested in exploring these intersections.

Download or read book Camping Washington 2E written by Ron C. Judd. This book was released on 2017-06-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • More than 600 campgrounds • Now includes private campgrounds in areas where public facilities are lacking • New photographs throughout and greater detail on individual campsites You’re planning an outing and gathering your gear or hitching up the trailer. To find the perfect campground you could go online and Google around for a couple of hours. Or you could just grab a copy of Camping Washington, 2nd edition and find what you’re looking for—not too big, not too small, not too rustic, or more rustic than not—in a couple of minutes, vetted and recommended by a true expert with strong opinions. And while, yes, there probably is an app for that, sometimes a book is just better (no page loading, no scrolling, no password). This popular guidebook reviews and rates each campground so you’ll know exactly what to expect, including useful details on campsite surfaces, degree of privacy, best and worst sites in a given campground, and nearby hikes, fishing spots, and other attractions.
