Book Synopsis Burning the Veil by : Neil McMaster

Download or read book Burning the Veil written by Neil McMaster. This book was released on 2012-05-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burning the Veil draws upon sources from newly-opened archives, exploring the "emancipation" of Muslim women from the veil, seclusion and perceived male oppression during the Algerian War of decolonization. The claimed French liberation was contradicted by the violence inflicted on women through rape, torture, and destruction of villages. This book examines the roots of this contradiction in the theory of "revolutionary warfare", and the attempt to defeat the National Liberation Front by penetrating the Muslim family, seen as a bastion of resistance. Striking parallels with contemporary Afghanistan and Iraq, French "emancipation" produced a backlash that led to deterioration in the social and political position of Muslim women. This analysis of how and why attempts to Westernize Muslim women ended in catastrophe has contemporary relevance and will be important to students and academics engaged in the study of French and colonial history, feminism, and contemporary Islam.

Book Synopsis Can "I" Go Beyond the Veil? by : Denise Mosley

Download or read book Can "I" Go Beyond the Veil? written by Denise Mosley. This book was released on 2005-05-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church is hindering a mighty work by dictating who is allowed to speak! I once heard a Baptist pastor say that women should know when to be quiet. Trust me when I say that true women of God do know when to keep their mouths closed, but we also know that it is our spiritual responsibility to heed God's calling! Does it matter to the Christian message whether the person standing behind the pulpit is male or female? Is the sex of the messenger more important than the message? God's ultimate goal is that we might be saved (and when I say "we," that means everyone) and that in the last days, His spirit be poured out on all men. If that is the case, doesn't it make sense that He would use whatever vessels are equipped, willing and ready to be used to get that job done? Women of God, Christ did not apologize to His generation for being Himself. Neither should you! So get yourself together. It's time to set the atmosphere for change in your life and become a suitable place where His grace and name can dwell.

Book Synopsis Veil and Burn by : Laurie Clements Lambeth

Download or read book Veil and Burn written by Laurie Clements Lambeth. This book was released on 2008-03-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerned with physical experience, pain, and disability, Veil and Burn illuminates an intense desire to feel through the Other, embrace it, become it, and in the transformation, to understand the suffering body. In poems about animals, artifacts, and monsters, Lambeth displays a fascination for all bodies while exploring their pain, common fate, alienation, and abilities. Hovering between poem and prose fragment, between the self and fellow creatures, Laurie Clements Lambeth celebrates physical sensation, imbuing it with lyric shape, however broken, however imprisoned the shape may be.
