Book Synopsis Building Dynamics by : Branko Kolarevic

Download or read book Building Dynamics written by Branko Kolarevic. This book was released on 2015-06-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buildings are increasingly ‘dynamic’: equipped with sensors, actuators and controllers, they ‘self-adjust’ in response to changes in the external and internal environments and patterns of use. Building Dynamics asks how this change manifests itself and what it means for architecture as buildings weather, programs change, envelopes adapt, interiors are reconfigured, systems replaced. Contributors including Chuck Hoberman, Robert Kronenburg, David Leatherbarrow, Kas Oosterhuis, Enric Ruiz-Geli, and many others explore the changes buildings undergo – and the scale and speed at which these occur – examining which changes are necessary, useful, desirable, and possible. The first book to offer a coherent, comprehensive approach to this topic, it draws together arguments previously only available in scattered form. Featuring the latest technologies and design approaches used in contemporary practice, the editors provide numerous examples of cutting-edge work from leading designers and engineering firms working today. An essential text for students taking design studio classes or courses in theory or technology at any level, as well as professionals interested in the latest mechatronic technologies and design techniques.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Building Energy Dynamics by : Bruce D. Hunn

Download or read book Fundamentals of Building Energy Dynamics written by Bruce D. Hunn. This book was released on 1996. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Building Energy Dynamics assesses how and why buildings use energy, and how energy use and peak demand can be reduced. It provides a basis for integrating energy efficiency and solar approaches in ways that will allow building owners and designers to balance the need to minimize initial costs, operating costs, and life-cycle costs with need to maintain reliable building operations and enhance environmental quality both inside and outside the building. Chapters trace the development of building energy systems and analyze the demand side of solar applications as a means for determining what portion of a building's energy requirements can potentially be met by solar energy. Following the introduction, the book provides an overview of energy usepatterns in the aggregate U.S. building population. Chapter 3 surveys work onthe energy flows in an individual building and shows how these flows interact to influence overall energy use. Chapter 4 presents the analytical methods, techniques, and tools developed to calculate and analyze energy use in buildings, while chapter 5 provides an extensive survey of the energy conservation and management strategies developed in the post-energy crisis period. The approach taken is a commonsensical one, starting with the proposition that the purpose of buildings is to house human activities, and that conservation measures that negatively affect such activities are based on false economies. The goal is to determine rational strategies for the design of new buildings, and the retrofit of existing buildings to bring them up to modern standards of energy use. The energy flows examined are both large scale (heating systems) and small scale (choices among appliances). Solar Heat Technologies: Fundamentals and Applications, Volume 4

Book Synopsis Structural Dynamics by : Harry Grundmann

Download or read book Structural Dynamics written by Harry Grundmann. This book was released on 2002. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings contain contributions presented by authors from more than 30 countries at EURODYN 2002. The proceedings show recent scientific developments as well as practical applications, they cover the fields of theory of vibrations, nonlinear vibrations, stochastic dynamics, vibrations of structured elements, wave propagation and structure-borne sound, including questions of fatigue and damping. Emphasis is laid on vibrations of bridges, buildings, railway structures as well as on the fields of wind and earthquake engineering, repectively. Enriched by a number of keynote lectures and organized sessions the two volumes of the proceedings present an overview of the state of the art of the whole field of structural dynamics and the tendencies ot its further development.

Book Synopsis Group Model Building by : Jac Vennix

Download or read book Group Model Building written by Jac Vennix. This book was released on 1996-08-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about increasing team performance. It focuses on building system dynamics models when tackling a mix of interrelated strategic problems to enhance team learning, foster consensus, and create commitment. The book is intended to be applied in the organizations of today. As the "command and control" organization evolves into one of decision-making teams, so these teams have become the critical building blocks upon which the performance of the organization depends. The team members face an increased complexity of decision making with the interrelation of several strategic problems. What this means is that people have different views of the situation and will define problems differently. However, research shows that this can in fact be very productive if and when people learn from each other in order to build a shared perspective. Learning in this way might prove to be the only sustainable competitive advantage for organizations in the future. As a result, team leaders want to create "learning teams" and are confronted with issues such as how to: create a situation where people doubt their ideas rather than stubbornly cling to dearly held views create a learning atmosphere rather than trying to "win" the discussion create a shared understanding of a problem in a team foster consensus and create commitment with a strategic decision facilitate Group Model Building Those who will benefit most from Group Model Building: Facilitating Team Learning Using System Dynamics are those who are familiar with systems thinking or organizational learning, or those who are working in groups and are coming up against the common difficulties.
