Book Synopsis Building a Multiethnic Military in Post-Yugoslav Bosnia and Herzegovina by : Elliot Short

Download or read book Building a Multiethnic Military in Post-Yugoslav Bosnia and Herzegovina written by Elliot Short. This book was released on 2022. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On 1 January 2006, soldiers from across Bosnia and Herzegovina gathered to mark the official formation of a unified army; and yet, little over a decade before, these men had been each other's adversaries during the vicious conflict which left the Balkan state divided and impoverished. Building a Multi-Ethnic Military in Post-Yugoslav Bosnia and Herzegovina offers the first analysis of the armed forces during times of peace-building in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This sophisticated study assesses Yugoslav efforts to build a multi-ethnic military during the socialist period, charts the developments of the armies that fought in the war, and offers a detailed account of the post-war international initiatives that led to the creation of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina. At this point, the military became the largest multi-ethnic institution in the country and was regarded as a model for the rest of Bosnian society to follow. As such, as Elliot Short adroitly contends, this multi-ethnic army became the most significant act in stabilising the country since the end of the Bosnian War. Drawing upon a wealth of primary sources - including interviews with leading diplomats and archival documents made available in English for the first time - this book explores the social and political role of the Bosnian military and in doing so provides fresh insight into the Yugoslav Wars, statehood and national identity, and peace-building in modern European history."--

Download or read book Reconstructing Multiethnic Societies written by Florian Bieber. This book was released on 2001. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A range of views on the challenges of the social, political, legal and psychological reconstruction of bosnian society are presented in this volume. It draws on the knowledge and experiences of scholars and practitioners from Bosnia-Herzegovina and internationally, and presents an analysis of the Bosnian case as an example for the study of other mulit-ethnic societies emerging from war. By combining a theoretical analysis of multi-ethnic societies with practical examples, the book hopes to highlight the complexities and sensitivities of a political system in a multi-ethnic state, especially in a post-war setting.

Book Synopsis Military Integration After Civil Wars by : Florence Gaub

Download or read book Military Integration After Civil Wars written by Florence Gaub. This book was released on 2012-05-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of multiethnic armies in post-conflict reconstruction, and demonstrates how they can promote peacebuilding efforts. The author challenges the assumption that multiethnic composition leads to weakness of the military, and shows how a multiethnic army is frequently the impetus for peacemaking in multiethnic societies. Three case studies (Nigeria, Lebanon and Bosnia-Herzegovina) determine that rather than external factors, it is the internal structures that make or break the military institution in a socially challenging environment. The book finds that where the political will is present, the multiethnic military can become a symbol of reconciliation and coexistence. Furthermore, it shows that the military as a professional identity can supersede ethnic considerations and thus facilitates cooperation within the armed forces despite a hostile post-conflict setting. In this, the book challenges widespread theories about ethnic identities and puts professional identities on an equal footing with them. The book will be of great interest to students of military studies, ethnic conflict, conflict studies and peacebuilding, and IR in general Florence Gaub is a Researcher and Lecturer at the NATO Defence College in Rome. She holds a PhD in International Politics from Humboldt University, Berlin.
