Book Synopsis Blessed are the Consumers by : Sallie McFague

Download or read book Blessed are the Consumers written by Sallie McFague. This book was released on 2013. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world bent on consumption, it is imperative that people of religious faith realize the significant role they play in advocating for the earth, and a more humane life for all. Sallie McFague argues that the root of restraint lies in the ancient Christian notion of Kenosis, or self-emptying, which she introduces through the life stories of John Woolman, Simone Weil and Dorothy Day.

Book Synopsis A New Climate for Theology by : Sallie McFague

Download or read book A New Climate for Theology written by Sallie McFague. This book was released on 2008-04-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change promises monumental changes to human and other planetary life in the next generations. Yet government, business, and individuals have been largely in denial of the possibility that global warming may put our species on the road to extinction. Further, says Sallie McFague, we have failed to see the real root of our behavioral troubles in an economic model that actually reflects distorted religious views of the person. At its heart, she maintains, global warming occurs because we lack an appropriate understanding of ourselves as inextricably bound to the planet and its systems. A New Climate for Theology not only traces the distorted notion of unlimited desire that fuels our market system; it also paints an alternative idea of what being human means and what a just and sustainable economy might mean. Convincing, specific, and wise, McFague argues for an alternative economic order and for our relational identity as part of an unfolding universe that expresses divine love and human freedom. It is a view that can inspire real change, an altered lifestyle, and a form of Christian discipleship and desire appropriate to who we really are.

Book Synopsis Discover the Mystery of Faith by : Glenn Packiam

Download or read book Discover the Mystery of Faith written by Glenn Packiam. This book was released on 2013-03-05. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the way we worship isn't just an expression of our faith, but is what shapes our faith? The Church has believed this about the way we worship and pray together for centuries: The way we worship becomes the way we believe. But if this is true, it’s time to take a closer look at what we say and sing and do each week. Drawing from his own discovery of ancient worship practices, Glenn Packiam helps us understand why the Church made creedal proclamations and Psalm-praying a regular part of their worship. He shares about why the Eucharist was the climactic point of their corporate “re-telling of the salvation story.” When our worship becomes a rich feast, our faith is nourished and no longer anemic. The more our worship speaks of Christ, the more we enter into the mystery of faith.

Book Synopsis Body of Christ Incarnate for You by : Adam Pryor

Download or read book Body of Christ Incarnate for You written by Adam Pryor. This book was released on 2016-10-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incarnation has always been an important concept within Christian theology. For centuries theologians have wrestled with how best to conceptualize the vexing problem of what it means that Jesus the Christ is fully God and fully human. In this book, Adam Pryor explores how the incarnation has intersected corresponding issues well beyond the familiar question of how any one person might have two natures. Beginning by identifying four critical themes that have historically shaped the development of this doctrine, Pryor goes on to offer a constructive account of the incarnation. His account seeks out the continued meaning of this doctrine given the increasing complexity that characterizes our understanding of human bodies—bodies that can no longer be understood as the locus of distinct subjects separated from the world of objects with the skin as an impenetrable boundary between the two. Making use of contemporary phenomenologies of the flesh and the erotic, Pryor develops an understanding of the incarnation that seeks to go beyond classical issues presented by two natures christologies. Incarnation, in guises as various as Jesus the Christ, cyborg bodies, and sacramental practices, becomes a way that God is diffused into the world, transforming how we are to be-with one another.
