Book Synopsis Biocommunication of Ciliates by : Guenther Witzany

Download or read book Biocommunication of Ciliates written by Guenther Witzany. This book was released on 2016-05-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first coherent description of all levels of communication of ciliates. Ciliates are highly sensitive organisms that actively compete for environmental resources. They assess their surroundings, estimate how much energy they need for particular goals, and then realise the optimum variant. They take measures to control certain environmental resources. They perceive themselves and can distinguish between ‘self’ and ‘non-self’. They process and evaluate information and then modify their behaviour accordingly. These highly diverse competences show us that this is possible owing to sign(aling)-mediated communication processes within ciliates (intra-organismic), between the same, related and different ciliate species (inter-organismic), and between ciliates and non-ciliate organisms (trans-organismic). This is crucial in coordinating growth and development, shape and dynamics. This book further serves as a learning tool for research aspects in biocommunication in ciliates. It will guide scientists in further investigations on ciliate behavior, how they mediate signaling processes between themselves and the environment.

Book Synopsis Ciliates by : Klaus Hausmann

Download or read book Ciliates written by Klaus Hausmann. This book was released on 1996. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As new hypotheses to explain biological processes are formulated and new techniques are perfected, the ubiquitous presence of ciliates and their ease of cultivation have won new converts from genetics, cell biology, ecology, molecular biology, and other specialists who are searching for a convenient organism to test their hypotheses and techniques. For these scientists as well as general biologists, graduate students beginning their careers, and those protozoologists already charmed by ciliates, this compilation of the current state of knowledge of ciliates will be exciting reading. Modern ultrastructural and molecular techniques offer insights on cytology, metabolism, and genetics of ciliates that have stimulated new conclusions about ontogenesis, sexuality, ecology, and systematics.

Book Synopsis Guidelines for the Identification of Ciliates in Wastewater Treatment Plants by : Susana Serrano

Download or read book Guidelines for the Identification of Ciliates in Wastewater Treatment Plants written by Susana Serrano. This book was released on 2008-02-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ciliated protozoa are one of the most relevant biological communities in the reactors of wastewater treatment plants. These organisms are excellent tools to assess the biological status of the reactor being used to monitor wastewater treatment plants performance. This book has been designed to simplify identification of ciliates, bearing in mind the difficulties on the manipulation and proper identification of these species. The specific role of ciliates in WWTP is discussed; methods for observation together with a glossary of scientific words and a simple and easy key to the taxonomic groups of ciliates are also provided. Illustrations, drawings, photographs and brief morphological descriptions of the species are included. Guidelines for the Identification of Ciliates in Wastewater Treatment Plants is the first book to use the new official classification proposed by the Society of Protozoologists (2005). It includes a complete chapter on methodology that is designed to be easy to follow and reproduce. A simple key to classify main taxonomic groups and genera is included, as are detailed descriptions to aid observation and identification of species of ciliates, in addition to drawings and photographs that accurately reproduce ciliate species.

Book Synopsis Biocommunication of Archaea by : Guenther Witzany

Download or read book Biocommunication of Archaea written by Guenther Witzany. This book was released on 2017-09-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaea represent a third domain of life with unique properties not found in the other domains. Archaea actively compete for environmental resources. They perceive themselves and can distinguish between ‘self’ and ‘non-self’. They process and evaluate available information and then modify their behaviour accordingly. They assess their surroundings, estimate how much energy they need for particular goals, and then realize the optimum variant. These highly diverse competences show us that this is possible owing to sign(aling)- mediated communication processes within archaeal cells (intra-organismic), between the same, related and different archaeal species (interorganismic), and between archaea and nonarchaeal organisms (transorganismic). This is crucial in coordinating growth and development, shape and dynamics. Such communication must function both on the local level and between widely separated colony parts. This allows archaea to coordinate appropriate response behaviors in a differentiated manner to their current developmental status and physiological influences. This book will orientate further investigations on how archaeal ecosphere inhabitants communicate with each other to coordinate their behavioral patterns and whats the role of viruses in this highly dynamic interactional networks.

Book Synopsis Biocommunication of Phages by : Guenther Witzany

Download or read book Biocommunication of Phages written by Guenther Witzany. This book was released on 2020-06-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to systemize all levels of communicative behavior of phages. Phages represent the most diverse inhabitants on this planet. Until today they are completely underestimated in their number, skills and competences and still remain the dark matter of biology. Phages have serious effects on global energy and nutrient cycles. Phages actively compete for host. They can distinguish between ‘self’ and ‘non-self’ (complement same, preclude others). They process and evaluate available information and then modify their behaviour accordingly. These diverse competences show us that this capacity to evaluate information is possible owing to communication processes within phages (intra-organismic), between the same, related and different phage species (interorganismic), and between phages and non-phage organisms (transorganismic). This is crucial in coordinating infection strategies (lytic vs. lysogenic) and recombination in phage genomes. In 22 chapters, expert contributors review current research into the varying forms of phage biocommunication and Phagetherapy. Biocommunication of Phages aims to assess the current state of research, to orient further investigations on how phages communicate with each other to coordinate their behavioral patterns, and to inspire further investigation of the role of non-phage viruses (non-lytic, non-prokaryotic) in these highly dynamic interactional networks.
