Book excerpt: Contemporary screen scoring is often described in terms of its emphasis on secondary compositional parameters over traditional thematic processes characteristic of the classical Hollywood era. Nicholas Reyland (2015) coins the terms “corporate classicism” and the “metaphysical style” to define two related trends in current scoring practices that he claims “[privilege] affect and style topical connotation over musical structures developing thematic or harmonic symbolism.” While Reyland acknowledges the broad appeal and accessibility of contemporary screen music, he downplays its potential to engage with longer-form expositions of narrative, asserting that scores instead rely on “affective short hands.” In this dissertation, I argue that recent scoring trends do not necessarily strip away the extra-semiotic dimension of the classical style, but may rather symbolically interact with film narratives through musical processes that deviate from leitmotivic discourse. By applying neo-Riemannian theory and other contemporary analytical approaches to recent film scores that privilege secondary compositional parameters, I highlight symbolic networks in which musical relationships reveal more than local audiovisual parallels, and reflect deeper narrative and character relationships. Stylistic trends in contemporary scoring are linked to broader developments in screen aesthetics that scholars have identified as characteristic features of post-classical cinema. Eleftheria Thanouli (2009) argues that post-classical filmmaking techniques do not work against the communicativeness of the narration and still create a widely accessible viewing experience even as they introduce new aesthetic norms and establish a new narrative paradigm. I suggest that contemporary scoring trends represent a parallel aesthetic development in which the new compositional paradigm does not necessarily reduce the “communicativeness” of the screen music, its capacity to function beyond an affective level, or its ability to operate in an explicitly representational manner. Overall, I aim to demonstrate how musical processes illuminated through contemporary analytical approaches can symbolically engage with aspects of film narrative that are uniquely post-classical

Book Synopsis Beyond the Soundtrack by : Daniel Ira Goldmark

Book excerpt: This groundbreaking collection by the most distinguished musicologists and film scholars in their fields gives long overdue recognition to music as equal to the image in shaping the experience of film. Refuting the familiar idea that music serves as an unnoticed prop for narrative, these essays demonstrate that music is a fully imagined and active power in the worlds of film. Even where films do give it a supporting role—and many do much more—music makes an independent contribution. Drawing on recent advances in musicology and cinema studies, Beyond the Soundtrack interprets the cinematic representation of music with unprecedented richness. The authors cover a broad range of narrative films, from the "silent" era (not so silent) to the present. Once we think beyond the soundtrack, this volume shows, there is no unheard music in cinema.

Book Synopsis Understanding the Leitmotif by : Matthew Bribitzer-Stull

Download or read book Understanding the Leitmotif written by Matthew Bribitzer-Stull. This book was released on 2015-05-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The musical leitmotif, having reached a point of particular forcefulness in the music of Richard Wagner, has remained a popular compositional device up to the present day. In this book, Matthew Bribitzer-Stull explores the background and development of the leitmotif, from Wagner to the Hollywood adaptations of The Lord of The Rings and the Harry Potter series. Analyzing both concert music and film music, Bribitzer-Stull explains what the leitmotif is and establishes it as the union of two aspects: the thematic and the associative. He goes on to show that Wagner's Ring cycle provides a leitmotivic paradigm, a model from which we can learn to better understand the leitmotif across style periods. Arguing for a renewed interest in the artistic merit of the leitmotif, Bribitzer-Stull reveals how uniting meaning, memory, and emotion in music can lead to a richer listening experience and a better understanding of dramatic music's enduring appeal.

Book Synopsis The Stone and the Wireless by : Shaoling Ma

Download or read book The Stone and the Wireless written by Shaoling Ma. This book was released on 2021-05-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the final decades of the Manchu Qing dynasty in China, technologies such as the phonograph, telephone, telegraph, and photography were both new and foreign. In The Stone and the Wireless Shaoling Ma analyzes diplomatic diaries, early science fiction, feminist poetry, photography, telegrams, and other archival texts, and shows how writers, intellectuals, reformers, and revolutionaries theorized what media does despite lacking a vocabulary to do so. Media defines the dynamics between technologies and their social or cultural forms, between devices or communicative processes and their representations in texts and images. More than simply reexamining late Qing China's political upheavals and modernizing energies through the lens of media, Ma shows that a new culture of mediation was helping to shape the very distinctions between politics, gender dynamics, economics, and science and technology. Ma contends that mediation lies not only at the heart of Chinese media history but of media history writ large.
