Book excerpt: "Bernie Sanders promised a Revolution, a promise that was seized upon with an almost religious fervor by a new generation of political activists, a generation raised with smart phones and terror alerts, a generation burdened by debt and facing dim economic prospects. Jeffrey St. Clair, editor of the political journal CounterPunch, called Bernie's raucous band of followers The Sandernistas, as they pitched themselves for battle against one of the most brutal political operations of the modern era, the Clinton machine. Ridiculed by the media and dismissed as a nuisance by the political establishment, the Sanders campaign shocked Clinton in a state after state, exposing the deep structural fissures in the American electorate. Ultimately the Sanders campaign faltered, undone by the missteps of its leader and by sabotage from the elites of the Democratic Party. By the time the Senator gave his humiliating concession speech at the convention in Philadelphia, even his most ardent supporters jeered him in disgust and walked out, taking their protests back to the streets. This turbulent year of mass revolt and defeat is recounted here, as it happened, by one of America's fiercest and funniest journalists."--Back cover.

Book Synopsis Bernie Sanders: In His Own Words by : Chamois Holschuh

Download or read book Bernie Sanders: In His Own Words written by Chamois Holschuh. This book was released on 2015-09-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a collection of the most salient hard-hitting, no-nonsense quotes that have made Bernie Sanders the beloved leader of our revolution. The longest-serving independent in US congressional history, Sanders currently serves as US senator from Vermont and is in the race for the Democratic Party’s nomination for president. Hundreds of thousands of people across the country are flocking to Sanders’s events to hear his wisdom on political corruption, distribution of wealth, international relations, immigration, health-care reform, climate change, education, and equality. Now fans and critics alike can hear what Bernie has to say just by picking up this book. Known for his firm opinions on the economy, health care, and the environment, Bernie Sanders is a self-declared democratic socialist. He has called for free state college and university tuition, spoken out against Wall Street practices, insisted on increasing the minimum wage, and demanded tax reform. He has proposed significant health-care reforms, championed causes for veterans and senior citizens, and urged the government to address climate change in a proactive manner. “A political revolution,” his campaign slogan, befits his assertion that the country is in need of an overhaul—economically, socially, and politically. As his grassroots campaign continues to explode, his social media presence flourishes and his events are attended in record-breaking numbers. Feel the Bern!

This book was released on 2020-01-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text explores the re-assertion of right-wing populist and fascist ideologies as presented and distributed in the media. In particular, attacks on immigrants, women, minorities, and LGBTQI people are increasing, inspired by the election of politicians who openly support authoritarian discourse and scapegoating. More troubling is how this discourse is inscribed into laws and policies. Despite the urgency of the situation, the Left has been unable to effectively respond to these events, from liberals insisting on hands-off free speech policies, including covering "both sides of the issue" to socialists who utilize a tunnel vision focus on economic issues at the expense of women and minorities. In order to effectively resist right-wing movements of this magnitude, a socialist/Marxist feminist analysis is necessary for understanding how racism, sexism, and homophobia are conduits for capitalism, not just ‘identity issues.’ Topics addressed in this text include an overview of dialectical materialist feminism and its relevance and a review of characteristics of authoritarian populism and fascism. Additionally, the insistence on a colorblind conceptualization of the working class is critiqued, with its detrimental effects on moving resistance and activism forward. This was a key weakness with the Bernie Sanders campaign, which is discussed. Online environments and their alt-right discourse/function are used as an example of the ineffectiveness of e-libertarianism, which has prioritized hands-off administration, allowing right-wing discourse to overcome many online spaces. Other topics include the emergence of the fetal personhood construct in response to abortion rights, and the rejection of science and expertise.
