Book Synopsis Battered, Beaten, Bruised, But Not Broken Signed Autographed 1st Edition by : Bev Gilliard

Download or read book Battered, Beaten, Bruised, But Not Broken Signed Autographed 1st Edition written by Bev Gilliard. This book was released on 2019-01-21. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her educational textbook style memoir, "Battered, Beaten, Bruised, But Not Broken," Bev candidly shared her detail experiences with Child Sexual Assault (CSA), Family Violence, Intimate Partner Violence, Aggravated Stalking, and the effects of abuse: Suicide and PTSD emotional trauma. Bev's story is very profound, and she addressed the moral and spiritual difficulties that challenge our Christian journey daily. Also, Bev explored the triumph of the human condition relative to God and presented the tenderness of His response.Bev also shared that even as a Christian, she had chosen relationships that were not healthy, and she had to say, "I do not" many times after saying, "I do." Bev says it is perfectly okay to correct the mistakes of our life once we recognize them. The problem exists when we see the writing on the wall, we know the relationship is unhealthy, we know our toxic situation is getting worst, yet we stay. There is nothing uncommon about individuals impacted by violence choosing to stay in bad relationships hoping against all hope that the person will change, or that they can fix the other person while trying to figure out, "What is wrong with me?" Impacted individuals will choose to stay in their abusive relationship for many reasons, including staying for the children, because of family values, cultural values, to save face, or they remain to wait for the connection to get better, discovering ten, fifteen, twenty years later, nothing is better. Sometimes they find they have lost their identity, lost their purpose, and sometimes, lost their will to live. Bev says, "Individuals impacted by any form of violence and mental trauma can recover and live a healthy and happy life, they just have to say no to abuse and yes to living." Some people, including young adults, stay out of fear, or because they do not want to be viewed as a failure. Therefore, it was essential to Bev to chronicle her journey, mental clarity, and overall sense of well-being through each phase of her experience in such a transparent and honest way that readers can travel her journey, feel her emotions and champion her resiliency. Also, Bev used this opportunity to educate on sexual assault, abuse, bullying, and stalking and the emotional toll on individuals impacted, and how our experiences do not have to define us. Although we will never forget, we can recover from abuse and can get through the experience and live a beautiful life. Trust God, have faith, believe, and be willing to say no to violence and yes to a life of peace.

Book Synopsis In the Time of the Butterflies by : Julia Alvarez

Download or read book In the Time of the Butterflies written by Julia Alvarez. This book was released on 2010-01-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024, internationally bestselling author and literary icon Julia Alvarez's In the Time of the Butterflies is "beautiful, heartbreaking and alive ... a lyrical work of historical fiction based on the story of the Mirabal sisters, revolutionary heroes who had opposed and fought against Trujillo." (Concepción de León, New York Times) Alvarez’s new novel, The Cemetery of Untold Stories, is coming April 2, 2024. Pre-order now! It is November 25, 1960, and three beautiful sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The official state newspaper reports their deaths as accidental. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor does it explain that the sisters were among the leading opponents of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo’s dictatorship. It doesn’t have to. Everybody knows of Las Mariposas—the Butterflies. In this extraordinary novel, the voices of all four sisters--Minerva, Patria, María Teresa, and the survivor, Dedé--speak across the decades to tell their own stories, from secret crushes to gunrunning, and to describe the everyday horrors of life under Trujillo’s rule. Through the art and magic of Julia Alvarez’s imagination, the martyred Butterflies live again in this novel of courage and love, and the human costs of political oppression. "Alvarez helped blaze the trail for Latina authors to break into the literary mainstream, with novels like In the Time of the Butterflies and How the García Girls Lost Their Accents winning praise from critics and gracing best-seller lists across the Americas."—Francisco Cantú, The New York Times Book Review "This Julia Alvarez classic is a must-read for anyone of Latinx descent." —Popsugar.com "A gorgeous and sensitive novel . . . A compelling story of courage, patriotism and familial devotion." —People "Shimmering . . . Valuable and necessary." —Los Angeles Times "A magnificent treasure for all cultures and all time.” —St. Petersburg Times "Alvarez does a remarkable job illustrating the ruinous effect the 30-year dictatorship had on the Dominican Republic and the very real human cost it entailed."—Cosmopolitan.com
