Book excerpt: A lighthearted story about the consequences of rash decisions and the importance of problem solving, responsibility, and acceptance for kids ages 4-8. Told in rhyming couplets, The Barefoot King recounts the story of a young king named Creet who rules a land where people walk around with bare feet. Easily distracted, one day King Creet stubs his toe on a rock and is shocked by the pain. Never wanting to experience that discomfort again, the king decides to cover his whole kingdom in leather, with unfortunate consequences. This short and playful story helps parents discuss concepts of acceptance, awareness, and responsibility with kids. Seeing the consequences of King Creet's decision, kids will learn to navigate challenges in their own lives and the opportunities for growth that obstacles provide. A short "reader's guide" accompanies the story, aiding parents and teachers in discussions of how to handle life's bumps with conscious breaths and mindful steps.

Book excerpt: January 2015 Cumulative Pocket Part The Litigation Handbook On West Virginia Rules of Civil Procedure - Fourth Edition provides a meaningful and thorough starting point for any practitioner seeking a fundamental understanding of the application of the West Virgina rules of civil procedure. For ease and convenience, the material in this new Handbook has been organized to correspond with actual rule citations. For example, § 12(b)(6) of the Handbook corresponds with Rule 12(b)(6) of the rules of civil procedure. Therefore, if a practitioner knows the particular rule citation under consideration, he or she need only find the corresponding section citation in this Handbook for a discussion of the particular rule. The Fourth Edition cites per curiam opinions issued by the state Supreme Court and also provides federal case law construing the federal rules of civil procedure. As the practitioner knows, West Virginia's rules of civil procedure are patterned after the federal rules. With this knowledge in mind, the Handbook offers as persuasive authority federal decisions construing the federal rules. As a practical matter, the Handbook limits its use of federal case law to areas that the state Supreme Court has not issued controlling opinions upon. This Handbook is an invaluable tool for both the bench and bar. Order Litigation Handbook on West Virginia Rules of Civil Procedure Fourth Edition for your office today!

Book Synopsis The Rule Book by : Jaakko Stenros

Download or read book The Rule Book written by Jaakko Stenros. This book was released on 2024-03-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How games are built on the foundations of rules, and how rules—of which there are only five kinds—really work. Board games to sports, digital games to party games, gambling to role-playing games. They all share one thing in common: rules. Indeed, rules are the one and only thing game scholars agree is central to games. But what, in fact, are rules? In The Rule Book, Jaakko Stenros and Markus Montola explore how different kinds of rules work as building blocks of games. Rules are constraints placed on us while we play, carving a limited possibility space for us. They also inject meaning into our play: without rules there is no queen in chess, no ball in Pong, and no hole in one in golf. Stenros and Montola discuss how rules constitute games through five foundational types: the explicit statements listed in the official rules, the private limitations and goals players place on themselves, the social and cultural norms that guide gameplay, the external regulation the surrounding society places on playing, and the material embodiments of rules. Depending on the game, rules can be formal, internal, social, external, or material. By considering the similarities and differences of wildly different games and rules within a shared theoretical framework, The Rule Book renders all games more legible.
