Book excerpt: Environmental protection is one of the areas where the Balkan countries still face a big challenge to catch up with their western neighbors. After the 1990s conflicts and the breakup of Yugoslavia, six new Balkan states emerged. Apart from integrating environmental concerns into the new policies, a major challenge is environmental management across new borders. What used to be six international river basins in the Balkans have now evolved into 13 internationally shared river basins and four transboundary lake basins. The situation is similar for areas of high ecological value, many of which are often located in mountainous border areas. To ensure effective protection, entire ecosystems have to be addressed regardless of the political borders that are dividing them on a map. Transboundary cooperation between countries sharing one or more natural resources is therefore indispensable for creating common frameworks that promote their sustainable use while offering an opportunity for confidence-building between cooperating countries.

Book excerpt: Authored by international experts from academia, international organizations, governments and NGOs, this book highlights the main environmental security issues in the South-East European (SEE) countries, with a particular focus on climate change and water management. The common goal of the authors was to provide a reliable evaluation of whether existing legal regimes and correct implementation of applicable international treaties may contribute to reducing environmental security risks in the region. In-depth analyses and assessment of major challenges in compliance, serve as a firm ground which such evaluation is based on. This volume is recommended for public officials, legal practitioners and consultants. Its interest may also extend beyond the SEE countries, serving as a case-study of a broader and paradigmatic relevance of the analysis and management of environmental and security issues in a trans-boundary context.

Download or read book The Radical Left in Europe in the Age of Austerity written by Babak Amini. This book was released on 2017-10-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complex trajectory of Europe after the 2008 global financial crisis, has led to the catastrophic failure of deep austerity measures that swept across the Union, and is reflected in the rise of some radical left parties such as SYRIZA as well as an unfortunate rise in far right and nationalist parties and movements. This collection brings together a group of European scholars and activists from various European countries to discuss the recent economic, political, and electoral changes in respective countries, and the current status and future plans of radical left parties and movements. This book fills a significant gap within the current literature in the English-speaking world on post-2008 Europe, featuring a nation-based European wide survey of the current activities and plans of radical Left parties and movements in relation to the mounting social, political, and economic problems in Europe. This book contributes to the discussion by presenting a realistic depiction of the existing radical Left forces in Europe. This title was previously published as a special issue of Socialism and Democracy.

Download or read book Comprehensive Approach as "Sine Qua Non" for Critical Infrastructure Protection written by D. Čaleta. This book was released on 2014-12-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world in which we live is becoming ever more complex, both from the viewpoint of ensuring security, and also because of our level of dependence on technology, as represented by so-called critical infrastructure. Despite the efforts of national security entities in the national and international context, terrorist attacks will probably never be completely preventable. This makes it necessary to prepare the functioning of our systems for the occurrence of a terrorist attack so that they will operate quickly and effectively even in this type of crisis. This book presents the papers delivered at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop: Managing Terrorism Threats to Critical Infrastructure – Challenges for South Eastern Europe, held in Belgrade, Serbia in May 2014. The book is divided into five sections: strategic environment and critical infrastructure protection; information security and counterterrorism considerations; terrorist threats to critical infrastructure operation – environmental aspects; energy security as a key factor of critical infrastructure protection; and national approaches to critical infrastructure protection. The book highlights the main dilemmas and challenges of managing terrorist threats in the region of South Eastern Europe, and will be of interest to all those whose work involves protecting critical infrastructure from the threat of terrorist attack.

Download or read book Vital Caspian Graphics written by . This book was released on 2006. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication examines very complex, yet fascinating issues affecting the environment of the Caspian Sea and the surrounding areas. We often associate the Caspian Sea with caviar that is legally or illegally finding its way to our tables, but overlook the footprints left by a number of industries installed on shores of the Caspian that are serving the world wealthiest market demands. The struggle for access to the vast resources of this unique and fragile ecosystem and the development of new transportation routes between Europe and Asia continue to shape the geopolitical and security conditions in and around the world's largest body of inland water. These and other developments pose complex challenges in the efforts of countries to improve the damaged ecosystems that the local communities are depending on.
