Book Synopsis Automotive Industrialisation by : Kaoru Natsuda

Download or read book Automotive Industrialisation written by Kaoru Natsuda. This book was released on 2020-10-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the industrial policies of Southeast Asian economies in their motor vehicle industries from early import substitution to policy-making under the more liberalised WTO policy regime. The book examines how inward automotive investment, especially from Japan, has been affected by policies, and how such investment has promoted industrial development in the late-industrialising economies within ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). It provides insights into the automotive industry of Southeast Asia in terms of production volumes, sales volumes, market structure, and trade. Through country case studies, the book is a useful reference and illustrates how industrial policies in Southeast Asia have affected the spread of automotive development in the region. It will appeal to policy-makers and researchers interested in the automobile industry, industrial policies in the industry and the spread of development from foreign investors to local firms.

Book excerpt: In this study, the author (whose affiliation is not stated) discusses the auto parts sector as a microcosm of economic development in Brazil. He follows the introduction of a horizontal vision for the industry and the hybrid organizational practices of the Fifties and early Sixties, through the failure of the industry to consolidate, and the subsequent unraveling, and eventual partial reconstruction, of horizontal arrangements. Theoretical implications of the historical vision are also explored, as are the background and strategic ingredients of the industry's strategy for exports and competitiveness. Book Synopsis Vietnam’s Industrialization Ambitions by : Le Hong Hiep

Download or read book Vietnam’s Industrialization Ambitions written by Le Hong Hiep. This book was released on 2019-01-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnam has officially admitted its failure to achieve industrialized economy status by 2020. This failure is partly due to its inability to grow a strong local manufacturing base and develop key strategic industries. The participation of Vingroup, the country’s largest private conglomerate, in the automotive industry has sparked new hopes for Vietnam’s industrialization drive. The company, through its subsidiary Vinfast, aims to become a leading automaker in Southeast Asia with an annual capacity of 500,000 units and a localization ratio of 60 per cent by 2025. Challenges that Vinfast faces include its unproven track record in the industry; the limited size of the national car market; the lack of infrastructure to support car usage in Vietnam; the intense competition from foreign brands; and its initial reliance on imported technologies and know-hows. However, Vinfast enjoys certain advantages in the domestic market, including the large potential of the Vietnamese automotive market; its freedom as a new automaker to define its business strategies without having to deal with legacy issues; Vingroup’s sound business and financial performance and its ecosystem; strong support from the Vietnamese government; and nationalist sentiments that will encourage certain Vietnamese customers to choose its products. If Vinfast is successful, it will boost Vietnam’s GDP growth and reinvent the country’s automotive industry. Its success will also contribute significantly to the realization of Vietnam’s industrialization ambitions and bring private actors into the centre stage of the economy. If the company fails, however, it will cause considerable problems for both Vingroup and the Vietnamese economy.

Book Synopsis Urban Shrinkage, Industrial Renewal and Automotive Plants by : Andreas Luescher

Download or read book Urban Shrinkage, Industrial Renewal and Automotive Plants written by Andreas Luescher. This book was released on 2018-12-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the relationship between the auto industry and the built environment at multiple scales, a topic of particular interest now as the industry is going through a period of major transformation. Drawing from multiple perspectives, including architecture, urban design and urban planning, the authors examine the changing form of the auto factory itself, the changing geography of auto production, and the challenges faced by communities as the auto plants that once brought them prosperity, and often a sense of identity, leave town. They examine four places that are dealing in different ways, and with varying success, with the aftermath of a decommissioned auto plant in their midst. These are Janesville, Wisconsin, and Willow Run, Michigan, in the U.S., and Bochum, Germany, and Genk, Belgium, in Europe. Together these four cases provide some clues about what the future might look like for places that were once intimately connected with the manufacture of cars.
