Book Synopsis Methods of Measuring Moisture in Building Materials and Structures by : Lars-Olof Nilsson

Download or read book Methods of Measuring Moisture in Building Materials and Structures written by Lars-Olof Nilsson. This book was released on 2018-04-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RILEM TC 248-MMB was established in 2012 with the main aim to improve and distribute knowledge related to moisture measurement in construction materials in various scientific and industrial applications. Properties and performance of building materials and structures are influenced to a large extent by the moisture conditions in the materials. Obvious examples are heat conductivity, shrinkage and creep, transport properties, most types of deterioration, discoloration etc. For research and applications the moisture conditions must be quantified, by measurements in the laboratory or under field conditions. There is much variation in methods being used, even within the same topic, in different countries, both with regard to materials and to applications. No consensus whatsoever does exist. For the construction industry it is important to be able to quantify the moisture conditions in an accurate way in various applications. This state-of-the-art report is divided into two parts, Principles and Applications, with altogether 28 chapters on various moisture measuring principles and a number of applications.

Book Synopsis Assessing Moisture in Building Materials by : Charles Stirling

Download or read book Assessing Moisture in Building Materials written by Charles Stirling. This book was released on 2002. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this Good Repair Guide is to provide building professionals with examples of analytical techniques which could be used to supplement visual information in the identification of moisture problems. Part 2 discusses a range of techniques available for measuring moisture content in building materials: the electrical resistance method (using moisture meters), drilling walls to collect samples, and environmental monitoring using sensors. These are described and discussed.

Book excerpt: The objective of this Good Repair Guide is to provide building professionals with examples of analytical techniques which could be used to supplement visual information in the identification of moisture problems. Part 3 gives advice on how to interpret the data gathered from moisture meters or drilling samples from walls recording environmental data logged by sensors over a period of time can establish patterns, such as a rise in humidity linked to a rise or fall in temperature. This gives clues to the cause of the moisture problem.

Book Synopsis Damp Indoor Spaces and Health by : Institute of Medicine

Download or read book Damp Indoor Spaces and Health written by Institute of Medicine. This book was released on 2004-10-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all homes, apartments, and commercial buildings will experience leaks, flooding, or other forms of excessive indoor dampness at some point. Not only is excessive dampness a health problem by itself, it also contributes to several other potentially problematic types of situations. Molds and other microbial agents favor damp indoor environments, and excess moisture may initiate the release of chemical emissions from damaged building materials and furnishings. This new book from the Institute of Medicine examines the health impact of exposures resulting from damp indoor environments and offers recommendations for public health interventions. Damp Indoor Spaces and Health covers a broad range of topics. The book not only examines the relationship between damp or moldy indoor environments and adverse health outcomes but also discusses how and where buildings get wet, how dampness influences microbial growth and chemical emissions, ways to prevent and remediate dampness, and elements of a public health response to the issues. A comprehensive literature review finds sufficient evidence of an association between damp indoor environments and some upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing, wheezing, and asthma symptoms in sensitized persons. This important book will be of interest to a wide-ranging audience of science, health, engineering, and building professionals, government officials, and members of the public.
