Book Synopsis Images, Representations and Heritage by : Ian Russell

Download or read book Images, Representations and Heritage written by Ian Russell. This book was released on 2006-11-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume begins a discourse on the implications of performing archaeology in a world dominated by modern trends of mass production, mass replication and representation of cultural forms, and mass consumption of images of the past. The contributors explore the extent to which contemporary consumption of mass-produced replicas, simulations, images and experiences of the past cause a crisis of representation of the past. Eschewing romantic beliefs, it discusses what archaeology can do.

Book Synopsis Archaeology, Politics and Islamicate Cultural Heritage in Europe by : David Govantes Edwards

Download or read book Archaeology, Politics and Islamicate Cultural Heritage in Europe written by David Govantes Edwards. This book was released on 2022. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeology, Politics and Islamicate Cultural Heritage in Europe responds to the wishes of specialists in the history and archaeology of Islamicate societies in Europe to explore the integration of these societies into historical narratives. In order to deal with the multiple implications and wide ramifications of the subject matter, the book offers a collection of papers that cover a broad range of topics, including historiography, gender and family studies, material culture, historical and contemporary identities, historical heritage management, and archaeological theory, while paying attention to the peculiarities of the record in European regions in which Islamicate societies have played a major historical role (and others in which this role may not be quite so obvious, such as Scandinavia). These wide-ranging subjects find their commonality in the book's aim of challenging the dominant simplifying narratives and their stress on interruption and exception. The impact of historical narratives in national and social identities is reflected in a wide range of issues, including school curricula, heritage management, the organisation of academic departments, the presentation of Islamicate history and archaeology in the media and the politics of identity of majority and minority groups. The volume does not avoid these questions, but tackles them head-on, challenging the unwillingness of some academics to engage in potentially disruptive political issues.

Book Synopsis United States Cultural Diplomacy and Archaeology by : Christina Marie Luke

Download or read book United States Cultural Diplomacy and Archaeology written by Christina Marie Luke. This book was released on 2013. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeology's links to international relations are well known: launching and sustaining international expeditions requires the honed diplomatic skills of ambassadors. U.S. foreign policy depends on archaeologists to foster mutual understanding, mend fences, and build bridges. This book explores how international partnerships inherent in archaeological legal instruments and policies, especially involvement with major U.S. museums, contribute to the underlying principles of U.S. cultural diplomacy. Drawing from analyses and discussion of several U.S. governmental agencies' treatment of international cultural heritage and its funding, the history of diplomacy-entangled research centers abroad, and the necessity of archaeologists' involvement in diplomatic processes, this seminal work has implications for the fields of cultural heritage, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, international relations, law, and policy studies.
