Book excerpt: Architects draw for a variety of purposes; they draw to assimilate places and precedents, to generate ideas, to develop a concept into a consistent project in a team, to communicate ideas and solutions to patrons and clients, and to guide building contractors during the construction stages, as well as to produce further elaborations in order to publish their project in a treatise, a journal or their own portfolio. Most importantly, architects draw to think and to manage complexity in a visual way. By taking into account innovative and interdisciplinary uses of architectural drawing in the design process, both historical and current, the collection of chapters and interviews in this book frames a new critical perspective and a uniquely contextual appreciation of drawing as a way to encourage spatial thinking and practice in architecture and urbanism. The authors take the discussion to a new level of philosophical sophistication, while also considering drawing in relation to a series of specific engagements with urban development, planning, and architecture.

Book Synopsis Drawing Architecture and the Urban by : Sam Jacoby

Download or read book Drawing Architecture and the Urban written by Sam Jacoby. This book was released on 2016-04-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing is an important means to analyse information and develop rigorous arguments both conceptually and visually. Going beyond the how-to drawing manual, this book provides an instrumental approach to drawing, especially computer-generated drawings; it outlines how drawings should be used to convey clear and analytical information in the process of design, as well as the communication and discussion of a project. In depth examples are provided how to communicate effectively. The final section demonstrates how to transform case-studies, directly connecting an analytical approach with the design process.

Book Synopsis Ways to Study and Research Urban, Architectural and Technical Design by : T.M. de Jong

Download or read book Ways to Study and Research Urban, Architectural and Technical Design written by T.M. de Jong. This book was released on 2002. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we develop a scientific basis for architectural, urban and technical design? When can a design be labelled as scientific output, comparable with a scientific report? What are the similarities and dis-similarities between design and empirical research, and between design research, typological research, design study and study by design? Is there a need for a particular methodology for design driven study and research? With these questions in mind, more than forty members of the Faculty of Architecture of the Delft University of Technology have described their ways of study and research. Each chapter shows the objectives, the methodology and its implementation in search for a deeper knowledge of design processes and an optimal quality of the design itself. The authors - among them architects, urban planners, social scientists, lawyers, technicians and information scientists – have widely differing backgrounds. Nevertheless, they share a great deal. The central focus is a better understanding of design processes, design tools and the effects of design interventions on issues such as utility, aesthetics meaning, sustainability and feasibility.

Book Synopsis Drawn to Design by : Eric Jenkins

Download or read book Drawn to Design written by Eric Jenkins. This book was released on 2022-04-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a guide for students and teachers to understand the need for, the role of and the methods and techniques of freehand analytical sketching in architecture. The presentation focuses on drawing as an approach to and phase of architectural design. The conceptual goal of this approach is to use drawing not as illustration or depiction, but as exploration. The first part of the book discusses underlying concepts of freehand sketching in design education and practice as a complement to digital technologies. The main component is a series of chapters that constitute a typology of fundamental issues in architecture and urban design; for instance, issues of "façade" are illustrated with sketch diagrams that show how façades can be explored and sketched through a series of specific questions and step-by-step procedures. In the expanded and updated edition, a new part explores the questions and experiences of large architectural offices in applying freehand drawing in the practice of architectural design. This book is especially timely in an age in which the false conflict between "traditional vs. digital" gives way to multiple design tools, including sketching. It fosters understanding of the essential human ability to investigate the designed and the natural world through freehand drawing.
