Book Synopsis Introduction to Mathematical Methods for Environmental Engineers and Scientists by : Charles Prochaska

Download or read book Introduction to Mathematical Methods for Environmental Engineers and Scientists written by Charles Prochaska. This book was released on 2018-05-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors' aim is to offer the reader the fundamentals of numerous mathematical methods with accompanying practical environmental applications. The material in this book addresses mathematical calculations common to both the environmental science and engineering professionals. It provides the reader with nearly 100 solved illustrative examples and the interrelationship between both theory and applications is emphasized in nearly all of the 35 chapters. One key feature of this book is that the solutions to the problems are presented in a stand-alone manner. Throughout the book, the illustrative examples are laid out in such a way as to develop the reader's technical understanding of the subject in question, with more difficult examples located at or near the end of each set. In presenting the text material, the authors have stressed the pragmatic approach in the application of mathematical tools to assist the reader in grasping the role of mathematical skills in environmental problem-solving situations. The book is divided up into 5 parts: Introduction; Analytical Analysis; Numerical Analysis; Statistical Analysis; and Optimization. The analytical analysis includes graphical, trial-and-error, search, etc. methods. The numerical analysis includes integration, differentiation, differential equation, Monte Carlo, etc. The statistical analysis includes probability, probability distribution, decision trees, regression analysis, etc. Optimization includes both traditional approaches and linear programming.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Applied Mathematics for Environmental Science by : David F. Parkhurst

Download or read book Introduction to Applied Mathematics for Environmental Science written by David F. Parkhurst. This book was released on 2007-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book teaches mathematical structures and how they can be applied in environmental science. Each chapter presents story problems with an emphasis on derivation. For each of these, the discussion follows the pattern of first presenting an example of a type of structure as applied to environmental science. The definition of the structure is presented, followed by additional examples using MATLAB, and analytic methods of solving and learning from the structure.

Book Synopsis Applied Mathematics for Environmental Problems by : María Isabel Asensio

Download or read book Applied Mathematics for Environmental Problems written by María Isabel Asensio. This book was released on 2021-02-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains some contributions presented at the Applied Mathematics for Environmental Problems minisymposium during the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) held July 15-19, 2019 in Valencia, Spain. The first paper addresses a simplified physical wildfire spread model, based on partial differential equations solved with finite element methods and integrated into a GIS to provide a useful and efficient tool. The second paper focuses on one of the causes of the unpredictable behavior of wildfire, fire-spotting, through a statistical approach. The third paper addresses low -level wind shear which represents one of the most relevant hazards during aircraft takeoff and landing. It presents an experimental wind shear alert system that is based on predicting wind velocities obtained from the Harmonie-Arome model. The last paper addresses the environmental impact of oil reservoirs. It presents high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin formulation combined with high-order diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta schemes to solve one-phase and two-phase flow problems through porous media. All the contributions collected in this volume are interesting examples of how mathematics and numerical modelling are effective tools in the field of environmental problems.
