Book excerpt: All there is to know about functional analysis, integral equations and calculus of variations in a single volume. This advanced textbook is divided into two parts: The first on integral equations and the second on the calculus of variations. It begins with a short introduction to functional analysis, including a short review of complex analysis, before continuing a systematic discussion of different types of equations, such as Volterra integral equations, singular integral equations of Cauchy type, integral equations of the Fredholm type, with a special emphasis on Wiener-Hopf integral equations and Wiener-Hopf sum equations. After a few remarks on the historical development, the second part starts with an introduction to the calculus of variations and the relationship between integral equations and applications of the calculus of variations. It further covers applications of the calculus of variations developed in the second half of the 20th century in the fields of quantum mechanics, quantum statistical mechanics and quantum field theory. Throughout the book, the author presents over 150 problems and exercises - many from such branches of physics as quantum mechanics, quantum statistical mechanics, and quantum field theory - together with outlines of the solutions in each case. Detailed solutions are given, supplementing the materials discussed in the main text, allowing problems to be solved making direct use of the method illustrated. The original references are given for difficult problems. The result is complete coverage of the mathematical tools and techniques used by physicists and applied mathematicians Intended for senior undergraduates and first-year graduates in science and engineering, this is equally useful as a reference and self-study guide.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Methods Of Theoretical Physics by : Karl Svozil

Download or read book Mathematical Methods Of Theoretical Physics written by Karl Svozil. This book was released on 2020-02-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book could serve either as a good reference to remind students about what they have seen in their completed courses or as a starting point to show what needs more investigation. Svozil (Vienna Univ. of Technology) offers a very thorough text that leaves no mathematical area out, but it is best described as giving a synopsis of each application and how it relates to other areas … The text is organized well and provides a good reference list. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and graduate students.'CHOICEThis book contains very explicit proofs and demonstrations through examples for a comprehensive introduction to the mathematical methods of theoretical physics. It also combines and unifies many expositions of this subject, suitable for readers with interest in experimental and applied physics.

Book Synopsis Selected Mathematical Methods in Theoretical Physics by : Vladmir P. Krainov

Download or read book Selected Mathematical Methods in Theoretical Physics written by Vladmir P. Krainov. This book was released on 2001-10-18. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected Mathematical Methods in Theoretical Physics shows how a scientist, knowing the answer to a problem intuitively or through experiment, can develop a mathematical method to prove that answer. The approach adopted by the author first involves the formulation of differential or integral equations for describing the physical procession, the basis of more general physical laws. Then the approximate solution of these equations is worked out, using small dimensionless physical parameters, or using numerical parameters for the objects under consideration. The eleven chapters of the book, which can be read in sequence or studied independently of each other, contain many examples of simple physical models, as well as problems for students to solve. This is a supplementary textbook for advanced university students in theoretical physics. It will enrich the knowledge of students who already have a solid grounding in mathematical analysis.

Book Synopsis Geometrical Methods of Mathematical Physics by : Bernard F. Schutz

Download or read book Geometrical Methods of Mathematical Physics written by Bernard F. Schutz. This book was released on 1980-01-28. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the methods of modern differential geometry have become of considerable importance in theoretical physics and have found application in relativity and cosmology, high-energy physics and field theory, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and mechanics. This textbook provides an introduction to these methods - in particular Lie derivatives, Lie groups and differential forms - and covers their extensive applications to theoretical physics. The reader is assumed to have some familiarity with advanced calculus, linear algebra and a little elementary operator theory. The advanced physics undergraduate should therefore find the presentation quite accessible. This account will prove valuable for those with backgrounds in physics and applied mathematics who desire an introduction to the subject. Having studied the book, the reader will be able to comprehend research papers that use this mathematics and follow more advanced pure-mathematical expositions.
