Download or read book Application of Radon Transform Techniques to Wake Detection in Seasat-A SAR Images written by . This book was released on 1990. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Radon transform accentuates straight line features in an image by integrating image intensity along all possible lines in the image space. The Radon transform integration process does not depend on a line being continuous in nature. This paper describes research on the use of the Radon transform to automatically detect ship wakes (linear but not necessarily continuous features) in Seasat-A synthetic aperture radar imagery. It presents results of tests to evaluate the capability of the transform, coupled with an automatic detection algorithm, to detect ship wakes and to distinguish wakes from other linear features. It also describes improvements to the processing technique in order to improve the probability of detection and reduce the probability of false alarms.

Book excerpt: This report describes research to investigate the use of the Radon transform in an automatic image analysis system for detection of ship wakes by synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The Radon transform integrates image intensity along straight lines crossing the image and does not depend on a line being connected or continuous, as is the case for wake images. The transform is therefore expected to improve the signal to noise ratio for wake-related features in an image and improve detection capability. The research applied the Radon transform to a number of actual SAR ship wake images and evaluates its usefulness in a wake detection system. The research also collected information on the properties of SAR wake images, studied other techniques which might improve wake detection, and investigated the addition of coherency techniques or other modifications to the Radon transform.

Book excerpt: The problem treated in this paper is the one of detection and restoration of ship wakes in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. This cannot be easily made, because SAR images are corrupted by a granular noise, called speckle and because there is no information about the direction and the level of the wake. For these reasons, most detection algorithms use the Radon transform, which makes square a straight with a point We propose here a new method, based on the manage between the Radon transform and a filtering method used to interpolate the image in a rotating reference system, introduced by the Radon transform theory. This filtering technic is the stochastic matched filtering technic, which allows to maximize the signal to noise ratio after processing. Experimental results on SIR-C/X-SAR images are presented and compared to those obtained using the classical approach.

Book excerpt: Wavelet analysis and its applications have been one of the fastest-growing research areas in the past several years. Wavelet theory has been employed in numerous fields and applications, such as signal and image processing, communication systems, biomedical imaging, radar, and air acoustics. Active media technology is concerned with the development of autonomous computational or physical entities capable of perceiving, reasoning, adapting, learning, cooperating, and delegating in a dynamic environment. This book captures the essence of the state of the art in wavelet analysis and its applications and active media technology. At the Congress, invited talks were delivered by distinguished researchers, namely Prof John Daugman of Cambridge University, UK; Prof Bruno Torresani of INRIA, France; Prof Victor Wickerhauser of Washington University, USA, Prof Ning Zhong of the Maebashi Institute of Technology, Japan; Prof John Yen of Pennsylvania State University, USA; and Prof Sankar K Pal of the Indian Statistical Institute, India.
