Book Synopsis An Introduction to Analysis by : Robert C. Gunning

Download or read book An Introduction to Analysis written by Robert C. Gunning. This book was released on 2018-03-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential undergraduate textbook on algebra, topology, and calculus An Introduction to Analysis is an essential primer on basic results in algebra, topology, and calculus for undergraduate students considering advanced degrees in mathematics. Ideal for use in a one-year course, this unique textbook also introduces students to rigorous proofs and formal mathematical writing--skills they need to excel. With a range of problems throughout, An Introduction to Analysis treats n-dimensional calculus from the beginning—differentiation, the Riemann integral, series, and differential forms and Stokes's theorem—enabling students who are serious about mathematics to progress quickly to more challenging topics. The book discusses basic material on point set topology, such as normed and metric spaces, topological spaces, compact sets, and the Baire category theorem. It covers linear algebra as well, including vector spaces, linear mappings, Jordan normal form, bilinear mappings, and normal mappings. Proven in the classroom, An Introduction to Analysis is the first textbook to bring these topics together in one easy-to-use and comprehensive volume. Provides a rigorous introduction to calculus in one and several variables Introduces students to basic topology Covers topics in linear algebra, including matrices, determinants, Jordan normal form, and bilinear and normal mappings Discusses differential forms and Stokes's theorem in n dimensions Also covers the Riemann integral, integrability, improper integrals, and series expansions

Book Synopsis Mathematical Analysis by : Andrew Browder

Download or read book Mathematical Analysis written by Andrew Browder. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the traditional purposes of such an introductory course is the training of a student in the conventions of pure mathematics: acquiring a feeling for what is considered a proof, and supplying literate written arguments to support mathematical propositions. To this extent, more than one proof is included for a theorem - where this is considered beneficial - so as to stimulate the students' reasoning for alternate approaches and ideas. The second half of this book, and consequently the second semester, covers differentiation and integration, as well as the connection between these concepts, as displayed in the general theorem of Stokes. Also included are some beautiful applications of this theory, such as Brouwer's fixed point theorem, and the Dirichlet principle for harmonic functions. Throughout, reference is made to earlier sections, so as to reinforce the main ideas by repetition. Unique in its applications to some topics not usually covered at this level.

Book Synopsis Yet Another Introduction to Analysis by : Victor Bryant

Download or read book Yet Another Introduction to Analysis written by Victor Bryant. This book was released on 1990-06-28. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics education in schools has seen a revolution in recent years. Students everywhere expect the subject to be well-motivated, relevant and practical. When such students reach higher education the traditional development of analysis, often rather divorced from the calculus which they learnt at school, seems highly inappropriate. Shouldn't every step in a first course in analysis arise naturally from the student's experience of functions and calculus at school? And shouldn't such a course take every opportunity to endorse and extend the student's basic knowledge of functions? In Yet Another Introduction to Analysis the author steers a simple and well-motivated path through the central ideas of real analysis. Each concept is introduced only after its need has become clear and after it has already been used informally. Wherever appropriate the new ideas are related to school topics and are used to extend the reader's understanding of those topics. A first course in analysis at college is always regarded as one of the hardest in the curriculum. However, in this book the reader is led carefully through every step in such a way that he/she will soon be predicting the next step for him/herself. In this way the subject is developed naturally: students will end up not only understanding analysis, but also enjoying it.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Analysis by : Corey M. Dunn

Download or read book Introduction to Analysis written by Corey M. Dunn. This book was released on 2017-06-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Analysis is an ideal text for a one semester course on analysis. The book covers standard material on the real numbers, sequences, continuity, differentiation, and series, and includes an introduction to proof. The author has endeavored to write this book entirely from the student’s perspective: there is enough rigor to challenge even the best students in the class, but also enough explanation and detail to meet the needs of a struggling student. From the Author to the student: "I vividly recall sitting in an Analysis class and asking myself, ‘What is all of this for?’ or ‘I don’t have any idea what’s going on.’ This book is designed to help the student who finds themselves asking the same sorts of questions, but will also challenge the brightest students." Chapter 1 is a basic introduction to logic and proofs. Informal summaries of the idea of proof provided before each result, and before a solution to a practice problem. Every chapter begins with a short summary, followed by a brief abstract of each section. Each section ends with a concise and referenced summary of the material which is designed to give the student a "big picture" idea of each section. There is a brief and non-technical summary of the goals of a proof or solution for each of the results and practice problems in this book, which are clearly marked as "Idea of proof," or as "Methodology", followed by a clearly marked formal proof or solution. Many references to previous definitions and results. A "Troubleshooting Guide" appears at the end of each chapter that answers common questions.
