Book excerpt: Law enforcement in a free society must strike a delicate balance between protecting individual rights to professional service, especially from government-sponsored agencies and the societys interest in professional ethical decision-making by law enforcement professionals. Often this is seen as one between a principal defense of civil rights and a mere Unitarian interest in improving the continuity of customer service. There is no certain place to fix the line between appropriate and Impermissible correctional officer and custody staff professional conduct. What is most conspicuous about this area of ethics in Department of corrections is the lack of controlling standards for defining the roles of correctional officers and custody staff. The purpose of the correctional Leadership and Ethics Training is to prevent breaches of the peace; enforce the laws, directives and regulations which govern the correctional institutions to protect its employees, the facilities, its assets and the nation's currency" which function in synchronization. Trainees will be able to consult a menu of techniques and be encouraged to contribute ideas of their own.

Book Synopsis Ethical Considerations for Research Involving Prisoners by : Committee on Ethical Considerations for Revisions to DHHS Regulations for Protection of Prisoners Involved in Research

Download or read book Ethical Considerations for Research Involving Prisoners written by Committee on Ethical Considerations for Revisions to DHHS Regulations for Protection of Prisoners Involved in Research. This book was released on 2007-01-22. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 30 years, the population of prisoners in the United States has expanded almost 5-fold, correctional facilities are increasingly overcrowded, and more of the country's disadvantaged populations—racial minorities, women, people with mental illness, and people with communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, and tuberculosis—are under correctional supervision. Because prisoners face restrictions on liberty and autonomy, have limited privacy, and often receive inadequate health care, they require specific protections when involved in research, particularly in today's correctional settings. Given these issues, the Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Human Research Protections commissioned the Institute of Medicine to review the ethical considerations regarding research involving prisoners. The resulting analysis contained in this book, Ethical Considerations for Research Involving Prisoners, emphasizes five broad actions to provide prisoners involved in research with critically important protections: • expand the definition of "prisoner"; • ensure universally and consistently applied standards of protection; • shift from a category-based to a risk-benefit approach to research review; • update the ethical framework to include collaborative responsibility; and • enhance systematic oversight of research involving prisoners.

Download or read book Beyond Recidivism written by Andrea Leverentz. This book was released on 2020-05-05. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding reentry experiences after incarceration Prison in the United States often has a revolving door, with droves of formerly incarcerated people ultimately finding themselves behind bars again. In Beyond Recidivism, Andrea Leverentz, Elsa Y. Chen, and Johnna Christian bring together a leading group of interdisciplinary scholars to examine this phenomenon using several approaches to research on recently released prisoners returning to their lives. They focus on the social context of reentry and look at the stories returning prisoners tell, including such key issues as when they choose to reveal (or not) their criminal histories. Drawing on contemporary studies, contributors examine the best ideas that have emerged over the last decade to understanding the challenges prisoners face upon reentering society. Together, they present a complete picture of prisoner reentry, including real-world recommendations for policies to ensure the well-being of returning prisoners, regardless of their past mistakes.

Download or read book Holistic Responses to Reducing Reoffending written by Ian Mahoney. This book was released on 2024. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Offering a range of theoretical and conceptual ideas as well as practical examples, this book provides a detailed insight into holistic opportunities for promoting desistance, reducing reoffending, and supporting (re)settlement and (re)integration. Providing a fresh lens through which to view existing debates within desistance and (re)settlement literature, the book encourages different perspectives and a new framing of current approaches. To this purpose, each chapter considers what embedding a person-centered holistic approach within the criminal justice system might look like, including ways of working within the confines of current processes, potential ethical considerations, and how to maximize the potential impact to reduce reoffending. Interdisciplinary in approach, Holistic Responses to Reducing Reoffending, will appeal to students, scholars, practitioners and policymakers within criminology, criminal justice, penology, and prison studies"--
