Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Communications - Movies and Television, grade: A ("excellent"), Stockholm University (JMK - Department of Journalism, Media and Communication), language: English, abstract: In this study the television crime series Dexter is analysed in its significance to create a feeling of sympathy for a serial killer that is here exemplified by the analyses of the title character and protagonist Dexter Morgan. Deriving from this apparently contradictory presumption the main objective of the study is thereby to examine to what extent the conception of the series and its form of representation contribute to this alleged effect and which media devices can be considered for this purpose. As a starting point the theories of social constructionism and frame theory are to be analysed to show what we know and how we gain our knowledge about crime and criminals from the real life and those in fictional narratives. The achieved findings of current media frames of serial killers in fiction and non-fiction reveal that there are differences in the representation of serial killers in the mass media, but the tools which are used to establish those frames are comparable. Further, by reconciling these existing frames with the frame the series Dexter generates of a serial killer a range of variations are identifiable. The main finding is that the form of representation often violates genre expectations of the audience and also hitherto familiar frames of serial killers are questioned by the series' concept and challenges the viewer in some way in order to promote an effect of sympathy. Due to the quite innovative character of the series its investigation might provide new input in the field of media and film studies of television crime narratives. Key words: crime series, Dexter, serial killer, sympathy, social constructionism, frame theory, media frames

Book excerpt: Law Enforcement tells us that there could be as many as 50 serial killers operating within the continental U.S. today. Most of them kill randomly which makes them hard to discern from other murderers. Knowing more about serial killers, the crimes they have committed and how they were caught allows you to stay safe and keep others safe by being able to recognize them. I have chosen the BEST OF THE WORST of serial killers to spot light. Ted Bundy, the Son of Sam, the Green River Killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, BTK, Zodiac and some that you may not know. Over 25 profiles that will keep you reading and may keep you awake at night. I lived just a few blocks from one of the Son of Sam murder scenes during the time he was still active. I know the fear. I was a teen when the Sharon Tate Murders took place and Zodiac was active. I have taken my fear and interest in this subject and created a comfortable read for those who share my interest.

Book Synopsis Ted Bundy by : Al Cimino

Download or read book Ted Bundy written by Al Cimino. This book was released on 2019-05-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On first impressions, Ted Bundy seemed like the perfect all-American boy. He was good-looking, fun and very charming; many women found him irresistible... But deep inside he was an evil monster who terrorised large areas of America, assaulting and murdering numerous women and adolescent girls. He used his insider knowledge of law enforcement to evade detection, escaping from imprisonment twice before his eventual capture. While he confessed to 30 killings, the real figure was probably much higher and many of the bodies have never been found. Crime writer and journalist Al Cimino delves into this astonishing and tragic tale, providing a detailed account of Bundy's crimes and the twisted manipulations of his victims. This is the story of a chameleon-like psychopath and necrophile who lured innocent victims to a horrible end.
