Dr. Katzenellenbogen's book explores the mediaeval practice of representing virtues and vices in a personified form which sprang from classical tradition and rose to a peak of expression in the thirteenth century. He distinguishes two great branches in this theme and treats them separately. Part One deals with dynamic representations in which the opposing moral forces take on human for and speak, act, and struggle with one another in traditional battle scenes. Part Two discuses the form of representation in which the personified virtues and vices no longer wield weapons against each other but appear as static images of complex intellectual scheme designed to reveal the nature of interrelationship of moral forces.
