Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to examine the self-perceptions and "lived" experiences of four African-American high school males who have been affected by the implementation of Zero Tolerance discipline policies in their middle to high school years. Through an interview process, participants contribute their powerful voices of perseverance that bridge the gap in the literature on the racial disproportionality in discipline for African American males, the impact of discipline on self-esteem in African American young men, and culturally responsible leadership. The participants identify the key factors that answer the secondary questions of how their experiences resonate with the constructs of Critical Race Theory and the School to Prison Pipeline and the internal and external factors that contributed to their perseverance. The findings also identify three major themes of isolation, misappropriated discipline, and the value of the African American high school male as human capital that have emerged and give deeper meaning to the impact of Zero Tolerance Policy on African American young men and the need for progressive leadership that embraces not alienates.

Book Synopsis African American Males and Education by : T. Elon Dancy II

Download or read book African American Males and Education written by T. Elon Dancy II. This book was released on 2012-10-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American Males in Education: Researching the Convergence of Race and Identity addresses a number of research gaps. This book emerges at a time when new social dynamics of race and other identities are shaping, but also shaped by, education. Educational settings consistently perpetuate racial and other forms of privilege among students, personnel, and other participants in education. For instance, differential access to social networks still visibly cluster by race, continuing the work of systemic privilege by promoting outcome inequalities in education and society. The issues defining the relationship between African American males and education remain complex. Although there has been substantial discussion about the plight of African American male participants and personnel in education, only modest attempts have been made to center analysis of identity and identity intersections in the discourse. Additionally, more attention to African American male teachers and faculty is needed in light of their unique cultural experiences in educational settings and expectations to mentor and/or socialize other African Americans, particularly males.

Book Synopsis Coolposing: Secrets of Black Male Leadership in America by : Dr. George Cross, DM

Download or read book Coolposing: Secrets of Black Male Leadership in America written by Dr. George Cross, DM. This book was released on 2010-10-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychology and social science practically ignored “cool” as a legitimate topic of research. While in fact, the occurrence of cool has played an important role in the historical, social and cultural development of Black people, especially some Black males. Some Black male businessmen use cool behaviors to fight against stress caused by meaningful life supporting social, economic, political, and business issues. Coolposing is a leadership strategy based on African cultural elements of communicative individuality and mysticism, emerging from influences of “cool pose.” It is a part of character, and character is the representation of one’s self in everyday life. It is a positive response by America’s Black males (and not niggas) to alienation, lynching, and loss of community grounded in the coolness of the first group of captured, yet resistant Africans, who arrived at Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. Within this book, readers will learn all about this often ignored subject, its central elements, and the nine kinds of “cool.” Coolposing proposes a major shift for the best mental, spiritual and physical health of Black males and prescribes measures for crisis intervention, as well as for preventing mental burnout.
