Book excerpt: Seventy-five years after Independence, India has much to be proud of. We are both the world’s biggest democracy and fastest-growing large economy. Yet, we face profound challenges that hinder both individual well-being and aggregate growth, including education and skills, health and nutrition, public safety, justice, social protection, and jobs. This seminal book systematically analyses India’s governance challenges, especially in delivering essential public services, and highlights how these are limiting India’s development. Drawing on a wealth of research and practical insights, it provides actionable, evidence-based strategies, emphasizing state-level reforms as critical for India’s advancement. Accelerating India’s Development is addressed to all Indians—leaders, officials, entrepreneurs, teachers, students, citizens, and civil society—and provides an urgent call to action. It argues that building an effective state is the great unfinished task of Indian democracy, because quality public services are key to translating the political equality of ‘One Person, One Vote’ into greater equality of opportunity for all Indians. Every chapter showcases the author’s dedication to bridging the gap between scholarly research, public understanding, and actionable governance. This book is a testament to cautious optimism and the belief that with the right public systems in place, India’s next twenty-five years can be a period of unprecedented growth and societal enrichment.

Book excerpt: Riven with scientific uncertainty, contending interests, and competing interpretations, the problem of climate change poses an existential challenge. For India, such a challenge is compounded by the immediate concerns of eradicating poverty and accelerating development. Moreover, India has played a relatively limited role thus far in causing the problem. Despite these complicating factors, India has to engage this challenge because a pathway to development innocent of climate change is no longer possible. The volume seeks to encourage public debate on climate change as part of India’s larger development discourse. This volume brings together leading researchers and practitioners—negotiators, activists, and policymakers—to lay out the emergent debate on climate change in India. Through these chapters, the contributors hope to deepen clarity both on why India should engage with climate change and how it can best do so, even while appreciating and representing the challenges inherent in doing so.

Book Synopsis India - Accelerating Growth and Development in the Lagging Regions of India by : Weltbank

Book excerpt: Although the Indian economy has been growing at a stellar rate of about 6 percent per annum since the mid-1980s, this achievement has been clouded by growing inequality and divergence in development outcomes among India's different regions. This study, thus, identifies a regional development strategy built around policies that are good for both the development of the Low Income States (LIS) and for India's overall development. That is, these policies are more in the nature of win-win rather than trade-offs between regional and national development. They focus on and address key issues: adverse neighbourhood effects; the comparative advantages of the LIS in agriculture and small town, agro-based, labor intensive industries; support for relatively inexpensive 'local or rural' infrastructure; critical human and social development that addresses exclusion, and; targeted investments of public expenditures alongside a build-up of capacity. These choices focus on core necessities rather than trade-offs between national and regional development. Further, they aim to achieve greater equity in welfare for the population of different regions rather than equality of economic activity in all regions. The rest of this summary discusses these findings in more detail. The next section, section B, presents the stylized facts about the lagging states; and finally, section C summarizes the findings on the constraints they face in raising growth and development.
