Download or read book About the Idol Offerings written by Joop Smit. This book was released on 2000. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul's exposition "About the Idol Offerings" in chapters 8-10 of his 'First Letter to the Corinthians' is a fascinating text. Rhetoric is the first reason for this. Sustained attention to the disposition of this apparently rambling text reveals a coherent and persuasive discourse. It comes as a surprise and a pleasure, then, to see an able communicator at work and to find oneself as a partner in the discussion. The social context is the second reason why Paul's exposition is such an interesting subject. The real point at issue is the position which the nascent Christian community should take within the urban society of the city of Corinth. Paul and the believers at Corinth are engaged in a dispute concerning social seclusion or integration. We hear their different voices and listen in to their discussion. Theology forms the third clue to the interest of this text. Here we encounter an unmistakably Jewish Paul, for whom the Shema is his basic rule of faith: Hear Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. In the same breath, however, he adds to this the confession of Jesus Christ as the One Lord. The resulting tension between Jews and Christians has brought about a tragic history. We still have to learn how to live this relationship in a positive way.

Book excerpt: Paul's first letter to the Corinthians is one of the most important epistles in the New Testament. David Garland's thoughtful new commentary draws on extensive research and engages the best of contemporary scholarship while providing a readable study that will be accessible to thoughtful readers as well as students, pastors, and scholars. After considering the context of the letter and the social and cultural setting of Corinth, Garland turns to his exegetical work. An introduction to each major unit of thought is followed by the author's own translation of the Greek text. In the course of his verse-by-verse commentary, he incorporates references to other ancient writings that help explain particular aspects of Paul's meaning or provide information on the social and cultural context. He also refers to the work of other commentators and provides extensive notes for further reading and research.

Book Synopsis Reading Corinthians and Philippians within Judaism by : Mark D. Nanos

Download or read book Reading Corinthians and Philippians within Judaism written by Mark D. Nanos. This book was released on 2017-08-18. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commentary tradition regarding 1 Corinthians unanimously identifies the "weak" as Christ-followers whose faith was not yet sufficient to indulge in the eating of idol food with indifference, as if ideally Paul wanted them to become "strong" enough to do so. Commentaries also do not hesitate to explain that Paul advised the Corinthians that he behaved like non-Jews (e.g., ate idol food) in order to win non-Jews to Christ, convinced that he was free from any obligation to observe Jewish covenantal behavior--except when he expediently chose to mimic Jewish behavior in order to win Jews to Christ. Similarly, commentators continue to conclude that in Philippians Paul called Jews "dogs" for upholding the value of undertaking circumcision, and that he renounced such identification as "mutilation." None of these interpretations likely represent what Paul meant originally, according to Nanos. Each essay explains why, and provides new alternatives for re-reading Paul's language "within Judaism." In this process, Nanos combines investigations of relevant elements from Jewish sources and from various Cynic and other Greco-Roman contemporaries, as well as the New Testament.
