Book Synopsis A Violent Embrace by : renée c. hoogland

Download or read book A Violent Embrace written by renée c. hoogland. This book was released on 2014-01-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instead of asking questions about the symbolic meaning or underlying "truth" of a work of art, renée c. hoogland is concerned with the actual "work" that it does in the world (whether intentionally or not). Why do we find ourselves in tears in front of an abstract painting? Why do some cartoons of the prophet Muhammad generate worldwide political outrage? What, in other words, is the compelling force of visual images, even—or especially—if they are nonfigurative, repulsive, or downright "ugly"? Rather than describing, analyzing, and interpreting artworks, hoogland approaches art as an event that obtains on the level of actualization, presenting "retellings" of specific artistic events in the light of recent interventions in aesthetic theory, and proposing to conceive of the aesthetic encounter as a potentially disruptive, if not violent, force field with material, political, and practical consequences.

Book Synopsis Locked in A Violent Embrace by : Zvi Eisikovits

Download or read book Locked in A Violent Embrace written by Zvi Eisikovits. This book was released on 2000-04-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing an entirely new approach to domestic violence interventions, this book is based on data accumulated by the authors over the past 12 years from a series of qualitative studies, clinical practice with battered women and their batterers, and as champions of the cause of battered women. After 25 years, practitioners in the field are starting to question the original models of intervention. Both types of practitioners and settings for service are expanding rapidly. The approach advocated in this book is likely to become an important part of a new wave of alternatives available to practitioners in the coming years. This accessible, practical volume describes and analyzes the experience of violence in dyadic life by focussing on couples who choose to remain together in spite of violence, while trying to make sense of a life in the shadow of pain, guilt, terror, and humiliation.

Book Synopsis Exclusion & Embrace by : Miroslav Volf

Download or read book Exclusion & Embrace written by Miroslav Volf. This book was released on 2010-03-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life at the end of the twentieth century presents us with a disturbing reality. Otherness, the simple fact of being different in some way, has come to be defined as in and of itself evil. Miroslav Volf contends that if the healing word of the gospel is to be heard today, Christian theology must find ways of speaking that address the hatred of the other. Reaching back to the New Testament metaphor of salvation as reconciliation, Volf proposes the idea of embrace as a theological response to the problem of exclusion. Increasingly we see that exclusion has become the primary sin, skewing our perceptions of reality and causing us to react out of fear and anger to all those who are not within our (ever-narrowing) circle. In light of this, Christians must learn that salvation comes, not only as we are reconciled to God, and not only as we "learn to live with one another", but as we take the dangerous and costly step of opening ourselves to the other, of enfolding him or her in the same embrace with which we have been enfolded by God.

Book Synopsis Embrace by : Jessica Shirvington

Download or read book Embrace written by Jessica Shirvington. This book was released on 2012-09-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Choices: Angel or Exile. Lincoln or Phoenix. The wrong choice could cost not only her life, but her eternity. It starts with a whisper: "It's time for you to know who you are..." On her 17th birthday, everything will change for Violet Eden. The boy she loves will betray her. Her enemy will save her. She will have to decide just how much she's willing to sacrifice. A centuries old war between fallen angels and the protectors of humanity chooses a new fighter. It's a battle Violet doesn't want, but she lives her life by two rules: don't run and don't quit. If angels seek vengeance and humans are the warriors, you could do a lot worse than betting on Violet Eden. LINCOLN: He's been Violet's one anchor, her running partner and kickboxing trainer. Only he never told her he's Grigori—part human, part angel—and that he was training her for an ancient battle between Angels and Exiles. PHOENIX: No one knows where his loyalties lie, yet he's the only one there to pick up the pieces and protect her after Lincoln's lies. In a world of dark and light, he is all shades of gray. The Embrace Series: Embrace (Book 1) Entice (Book 2) Emblaze (Book 3) Endless (Book 4) Empower (Book 5) Praise for Embrace: In her YA paranormal romance debut, Jessica Shirvington combines "the badass-action of Vampire Academy, the complex love triangles of Twilight, and the angel mythology of Fallen, taken one step further." —Book Couture "Shirvington's debut is smart, edgy and addictive—and sure to leave readers clamoring for the rest of the series."— Kirkus Reviews, STARRED "One of the best YA novels we've seen in a while.
