Book Synopsis The Changing Language Roles and Linguistic Identities of the Kashmiri Speech Community by : M. Ashraf Bhat

Download or read book The Changing Language Roles and Linguistic Identities of the Kashmiri Speech Community written by M. Ashraf Bhat. This book was released on 2017-06-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book operates from the premise that linguistic identities are important because they make sense to people, are meaningful, and have an impact on the thinking and behaviour of individuals and groups, both overtly and covertly. The framework outlined here synthesises key works on linguistic identity and draws together insights from a range of disciplines, such as sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, discourse analysis, cognitive sciences, and social psychology. It investigates linguistic assertions of community identity in the multilingual context of the Kashmir region in India, by studying the dimensions of changing language roles and linguistic practices in relation to the process of creating and maintaining new linguistic identities under different circumstances. It examines the nature of changing language roles as a combination of several linguistic and extra-linguistic factors, which include script uncertainty, interlingual diglossia, language attrition, language policies of the state, collective attitudes towards language(s), corresponding speech communities, intergenerational transmission, and instrumental orientation, among others. It demonstrates that changes in role are principally motivated by various factors, which may lead to the demise of the distinct symbol and roots of the Kashmiri linguistic-cultural identity in favour of the non-native code, Urdu, which could emerge as the primary linguistic identity in the near future.

Download or read book A Sociolinguistic Survey of Pashtu Community in Present Day Kashmir written by Neelofar Wani. This book was released on 2011-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this study was to understand the sociolinguistic situation of Pashtu community in present day Kashmir. Other objective was to understand the impact of Urdu and Kashmiri on Pashtu. The study was aimed at a comprehensive sociolinguistic account of Pashtu speakers in Kashmir valley. The study examined various features associated with the Pashtuns of Kashmir. As a minority community Pashtuns have been living in Kashmir from past 150 years and have been successful somehow in settling as groups in various districts of Kashmir valley. Inspite of being a minority community, Pashtuns have maintained their language and culture and have kept themselves distinct from the mainstream society. In this sociolinguistic study, it was interesting to note that Pashtuns in Kashmir although very conscious about Pashtu language and identity have somehow been influenced by their contact with Kashmiri majority in particular and the global society in general. This study has shown that education among youth is fostering positive attitudes towards the use of Kashmiri and Urdu.
