Book excerpt: Upton Beall Sinclair Jr. (1878-1968), who also wrote under the pseudonyms Ensign Clark Fitch and Frederick Garrison, was a prolific American author who wrote over 90 books in many genres and was widely considered to be one of the best investigators advocating socialist views and supporting anarchist causes. He achieved considerable popularity in the first half of the 20th century. An early success was the Civil War novel Manassas, written in 1903 and published a year later. It was originally projected as the opening book of a trilogy, but the success of his 1906 novel The Jungle caused him to drop his plans. He gained particular fame for The Jungle, which dealt with conditions in the U. S. meat packing industry and caused a public uproar that partly contributed to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act in 1906.

Download or read book PRISONER OF MORRO;"I'M GOING TO STOP ACCEPTING INVITATIONS, AND MEETING PEOPLE I DON'T LIKE AND DON'T WANT TO KNOW." written by UPTON SINCLAIR.. This book was released on . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) was a prolific American novelist and a political activist. Apart from his bestselling novels, which told in black and white, illuminated the realities of the United States at the turn of the twentieth century, he is remembered today for championing socialist causes that were naturally unpopular in conservative America. In classics like 'The Jungle' his work had considerable effects on American politics and legislation. Sinclair's socialist ideals and dreams found their way to his fiction as he believed that no art can be practiced for art's sake as long as humanity still suffers from persistent dangers and evils. Such orientations have often subjected Sinclair to harsh criticism and even to demonization from numerous critics and politicians of his time, the most distinguished among which was probably President Theodore Roosevelt. However his legacy is that of a successful and established novelist and activist who if not always righting the balance was able to bring an incisive mind and mass exposure to many areas and industries.

Book excerpt: Distinguished historian Robert Brentano provides an entirely new perspective on the character of the church, religion, and society in the medieval Italian diocese of Rieti from 1188 to 1378. Combing through a cache of previously ignored documents stored in a tower of the cathedral, he uses wills, litigation proceedings, fiscal accounts, and other records to reconstruct the daily life of the diocese.
