Book excerpt: This phase I survey presents findings from three sites on the Marshview property (bordered by Marshview Drive and Salt Point neighborhood to the west, Norfolk Avenue and multi-family developments to the north, Shadowlawn neighborhood (east), and Owls Creek/Lake Rudee (south). Site 44VB0363 is likely a colonial era homestead. Site 44VB0364, a farmstead from about 1850-1950, was farmed by William T. Gornto and later by James and Mary Grimstead, and finally by Fred J. Barcroft. Site 44VB0365 functioned as a farmstead ca. 1830-ca. 1950. Gideon Whitehurst built the farm that was in full operation in 1833. Subsequently the property was owned successively by Jeremiah Woodhouse, Sr.; Jeremiah Woodhouse, Jr.; and the Grimstead family. (adapted from Management Summary, p. iii-iv).
