Download or read book A Pandemic Nurse's Diary written by Nurse T. This book was released on 2020-09-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: March 25, 2020 When I walk through the automatic doors into the ICU at 7 AM, I step into a war zone. There are overflowing trash buckets and debris scattered all over the unit. Four red crash carts are outside the rooms, their drawers open and largely empty, witnesses to the chaotic night. One of the patients who coded survived, the three others died. One body in a white plastic shroud is still in a room on theb ed waiting for a stretcher. So opens the personal diary of Nurse T. She is one of the thousands of health care workers in New York City who covered their twelve hour shifts day after day as the Covid-19 virus raged through the city. Her account is personal, poitnant and poetic as she documents the suffering of the poor, largely immigrant patients who flooded the facility seeking treatment. It is also the story of a city, state and federal government that long denied hospitals like hers the funding and support they need to meet current standards. Long starved for funds, the facility's ancient infrasturure and inadequate supplies placed a heavy burden on the staff, who nonetheless walked up the marble stairs all through the crisis and gave their best, whatever the personal cost, whatever the outcome.

Book Synopsis Year of the Nurse: A Covid-19 Pandemic Memoir by : Cassandra Alexander

Download or read book Year of the Nurse: A Covid-19 Pandemic Memoir written by Cassandra Alexander. This book was released on 2021-07-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for anyone, nurse or otherwise, who is furious about how 2020 went down and—how 2021 is going. On April 25th, 2021 at 10:55 in the morning I messaged my chat group of girlfriends from where I work as a nurse on an ICU floor: “Nothing like feeling strongly suicidal at a job where you’re supposed to be keeping people alive,” and then tweeted that my “mental health wasn’t great” and deleted the Twitter app off of my phone because I didn’t want to “overshare.” That I felt like dying. That I would’ve rather died than still be at work. I am not alone. In 2020 there were roughly four million nurses in America. Only 2.7 million U.S. soldiers fought in the Vietnam War. Those who came back from Vietnam, having witnessed atrocities—and in some cases, participated in them—were changed forever. You can’t send four million people into a wartime-equivalent situation without psychological consequences. And yet that’s what America has done. Nurses spent a year battling a largely unknown assailant. Running low on gear. Fearing we might bring something deadly home. Getting coughed on by people who pretended that our fights were imaginary, that our struggles—watching people die, day after day, no matter what we did—were literally fake. Nurses are scarred. And unless people understand what we went through and commit to never let anyone lie in the future about public health, we will never become whole. Year of the Nurse: A Covid-19 Pandemic Memoir is Cassandra Alexander's poignant effort to come to grips with suicidal ideation and PTSD after being a covid nurse in an ICU in 2020. Comprised of original essays and her chronological journals, tweets, and emails as she attempted to save lives, including her own—this book will let you experience last year from the bedside. Come and understand what it was like.

Book Synopsis Diary of an Accidental Nursing Home Aide by : Linda Lewis

Download or read book Diary of an Accidental Nursing Home Aide written by Linda Lewis. This book was released on 2021. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I never thought my mom would end up in a nursing home, and I certainly never expected to be working at one either. To spend time with her during the strictest visitation guidelines, I took a job as a nurse's aide during COVID-19. Follow my journey as I join one of the most vulnerable, least respected, and lowest paid professions. Why did the virus spread so easily among workers and residents? What mistakes and deficiencies were concealed by an industry that favors greed over care? Faced with inexperience, lack of training, and a dire staffing shortage, these are my stories of life and death in the days of COVOD-19. This work has been fictionized and is a loosely knitted tapestry of places and people I created to tell this story. Please enjoy the rambling disclaimer inside" -- back cover.
