Book Synopsis A Multidirectional Europe by : Amy Joyce Leech

Download or read book A Multidirectional Europe written by Amy Joyce Leech. This book was released on 2023. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining cultural studies, literary analysis, and memory theory, I move away from reading these works under the lens of autobiographical trauma, seeking instead to examine the negotiation of post-socialist memory through attending to generic and formal elements of the literary texts. My literary close readings methodologically draw on individual texts, while reflecting how literature is in exchange with other media and also present in the public sphere. Rather than a homogeneous entity, I show, the invoked Europe constitutes a multidirectional network. Through my focus on contexts beyond East Germany and its experience of state socialism, I address the intersections of migration and memory and their relevance for contemporary and future Germany and Europe, while counteracting approaches that traditionally center West Central Europe in discussions of the continent. In dialogue with Michael Rothberg's conceptualization of multidirectional memory, I furthermore contribute to ongoing debates on different histories of violence, such as the current discussion about the relation or interaction between the memories of colonialism and the Holocaust.

Book Synopsis Political Careers in Europe by : Michael Edinger

Download or read book Political Careers in Europe written by Michael Edinger. This book was released on 2016-10-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European integration not only has changed career opportunities for politicians, it has expanded them. This book is dedicated to the study of political career patterns. It focuses on parliamentary careers in select European countries, but the U.S. is also included as a long-standing system with multi-level politics. The chapters, from an impressive range of scholars, represent a systematic investigation into level-hopping practices in Europe. While discussing the logic of moves across political levels, special attention is given to the impact of institutional reforms. The results indicate that the traditional model of career mobility, with the national level as the apex of a career, is still of importance in most countries – however, a clear trend towards multi-directional political careers is found.

Book Synopsis Europe Beyond the Euro by : Charles Enoch

Download or read book Europe Beyond the Euro written by Charles Enoch. This book was released on 2021-09-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book observes that a key determinant of Europe’s welfare over the coming decades will be how the region manages crises, both financial and societal. It examines how key institutional developments, such as Economic and Monetary Union, reflected differentiated integration (DI) in the EU, but argues that modern-day risks are highly interconnected, and their management therefore has to be inclusive. In that connection it looks in particular at the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB), whose mandate to protect financial stability also gives it relevance with regard to other crises. The book considers that the strengthening of this institution, and bringing it to the fore, would help EU member states, as well as countries around the EU including applicant nations, to manage financial and societal risks, including COVID-19 and the transition to a green economy, thus safeguarding the economies of Europe. It builds on a model of the EU allowing for DI in some activities, while ensuring sound governance arrangements between those inside and those outside that activity, and embodying inclusivity in the fundamentals of the EU, including in the management of risk.
