Book excerpt: This comprehensive, step-by-step laboratory training manual brings all the elements for a successful embryo transfer program together in a simple, organized, illustrated format. For the last several decades, artificial insemination has allowed genetic progress to be achieved relatively quickly through the widespread and efficient use of frozen semen. As a result of the advancement of embryo transfer (ET) techniques, cows can produce many offspring. A more rapid genetic gain is achieved which complements an artificial insemination program.

Book Synopsis Embryo Transfer Using Nondescript Desi Cow by : U. K. Atheya

Download or read book Embryo Transfer Using Nondescript Desi Cow written by U. K. Atheya. This book was released on 2024-08-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embryo transfer is one of the assisted reproductive techniques enabling the photocopying of originally desired ova to produce multiple copies for higher economic gain. A high-merit embryo (baby calf) produced by an elite cow, impregnated with a high-quality bull semen, if transferred to a nondescript cow can inherit the genes of the elite donor cow and the high-merit bull served, the biological parents of the new-born calf despite of been carried in different uterine environment of the nondescript cow. Instead of one egg shed in the reproductive cycle in a cow, several eggs can be shed by injecting a special type of follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), the porcine FSH which results in multiple ovulation thus, shedding multiple fertilized ova when inseminated with bull semen. These fertilized ova give rise to the embryos (baby calves) when flushed out and transferred to several recipient nondescript cows. It leads to the biological multiplication of offspring to parent cow and bull in the same period of nine months thus, replicating the desired herd fast. So far, this technique has been restricted to bull production in India but, now it is possible to multiply the cow germplasm having the capacity of producing more than 50 litres of milk per day encouraging youth to adopt cow production in India. It has been implemented by universities and state departments and is lucrative for private players like Godrej.
