Book Synopsis A Journey Into the Nonlinear World by : Jüri Engelbrecht

Download or read book A Journey Into the Nonlinear World written by Jüri Engelbrecht. This book was released on 2024. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a personal story about being involved in the study of nonlinear phenomena for more than half a century. The focus is on the development of ideas and the resulting knowledge. This is the visible part of research, but much is usually hidden. The author describes how the ideas were generated and how an "invisible college" of friends and colleagues has emerged. The presentation is spiced by thoughts about the beauty of science and philosophical considerations on the complex world, where nonlinear interactions play an important role. The book is in some sense a biography but not so much about the personal life of the author -- it is about science and its actors. Based on the author's experience in many European research centres and science policy institutions, it reflects on the development of knowledge in nonlinear dynamics as well as science policy actions over the second half of the 20th century and the first quarter of the 21st century. Graduates and postgraduates interested in the progress of research will find the book particularly engaging.

Book Synopsis It's a Nonlinear World by : Richard H. Enns

Download or read book It's a Nonlinear World written by Richard H. Enns. This book was released on 2010-10-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing examples from mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, economics, medicine, politics, and sports, this book illustrates how nonlinear dynamics plays a vital role in our world. Examples cover a wide range from the spread and possible control of communicable diseases, to the lack of predictability in long-range weather forecasting, to competition between political groups and nations. After an introductory chapter that explores what it means to be nonlinear, the book covers the mathematical concepts such as limit cycles, fractals, chaos, bifurcations, and solitons, that will be applied throughout the book. Numerous computer simulations and exercises allow students to explore topics in greater depth using the Maple computer algebra system. The mathematical level of the text assumes prior exposure to ordinary differential equations and familiarity with the wave and diffusion equations. No prior knowledge of Maple is assumed. The book may be used at the undergraduate or graduate level to prepare science and engineering students for problems in the "real world", or for self-study by practicing scientists and engineers.

Book Synopsis Qualitative Computing: A Computational Journey Into Nonlinearity by : Francoise Chatelin

Download or read book Qualitative Computing: A Computational Journey Into Nonlinearity written by Francoise Chatelin. This book was released on 2012-06-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High technology industries are in desperate need for adequate tools to assess the validity of simulations produced by ever faster computers for perennial unstable problems. In order to meet these industrial expectations, applied mathematicians are facing a formidable challenge summarized by these words — nonlinearity and coupling. This book is unique as it proposes truly original solutions: (1) Using hypercomputation in quadratic algebras, as opposed to the traditional use of linear vector spaces in the 20th century; (2) complementing the classical linear logic by the complex logic which expresses the creative potential of the complex plane. The book illustrates how qualitative computing has been the driving force behind the evolution of mathematics since Pythagoras presented the first incompleteness result about the irrationality of √2. The celebrated results of Gödel and Turing are but modern versions of the same idea: the classical logic of Aristotle is too limited to capture the dynamics of nonlinear computation. Mathematics provides us with the missing tool, the organic logic, which is aptly tailored to model the dynamics of nonlinearity. This logic will be the core of the “Mathematics for Life” to be developed during this century.

Book Synopsis Encounter with Chaos by : Joachim Peinke

Download or read book Encounter with Chaos written by Joachim Peinke. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our life is a highly nonlinear process. It starts with birth and ends with death; in between there are a lot of ups and downs. Quite often, we believe that stable and steady situations, probably easy to capture by linearization, are paradisiacal, but already after a short period of everyday routine we usually become bored and seek change, that is, nonlinearities. If we reflect for a while, we notice that our life and our perceptions are mainly determined by nonlinear phenomena, for example, events occurring suddenly and unexpectedly. One may be surprised by how long scientists tried to explain our world by models based on a linear ansatz. Due to the lack of typical nonlinear patterns, although everybody experienced nonlinearities, nobody could classify them and, thus,· study them further. The discoveries of the last few decades have finally provided access to the world of nonlinear phenomena and have initiated a unique inter disciplinary field of research: nonlinear science. In contrast to the general tendency of science to become more branched out and specialized as the result of any progress, nonlinear science has brought together many different disciplines. This has been motivated not only by the immense importance of nonlinearities for science, but also by the wonderful simplicity ohhe concepts. Models like the logistic map can be easily understood by high school students and have brought revolutionary new insights into our scientific under standing.
