Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orissa Its Geography, Statistics, History, Religion and Antiquities: To Which Is Added a History of the General Baptist Mission Established in the Province The first missionaries to a country are like the spies which Moses sent to "spy out the land of Canaan," and the writer has often been reminded of the language which Moses addressed to the persons engaged on that important occasion, - "Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain: and see the land what it is; and the people that dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, few or many; and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or had, and what cities there arc that they dwell in, whether in tents or strong holds; and what the land is, whether it be fat or lean; whether there be wood therein or not. And be ye of good courage and bring of the fruit of the land." Numb. xiii. 17 - 20. The General Baptist Missionary Society, which was formed in 1816, commenced its labours in Orissa in the early part of 1822, and the writer, who has long survived the first missionary, his beloved colleague, the Rev. W. Bampton, has for several years been desirous of laying before the friends of the Orissa Mission both in Britain and America, "the geography and statistics, history, religion, and antiquities of Orissa," with the History of its missionary operations during the first thirty years of its labours. Very few of the Ministers who were present, or living at the formation of the Society have been "allowed to remain by reason of death," and hence the propriety that this effort for "the generation that shall be" should not be long delayed.
