Alsadir says that genuine laughing stimulates "awakening," reveals one's "True Self," and reveals the "False Self" produced for societal compliance and security. The author gives deep insight into the uses of laughing to redistribute power and compares it to the musical word appoggiatura, a note that breaks an expected tune and evokes a deeper feeling. Alsadir navigates the intellectual terrain of Freud, Donald Winnicott, and neurophysiologist Guillaume-Benjamin Duchenne with aplomb, referencing Heidegger's phrase Aletheia, or "truth as unconcealment," as effortlessly as she invokes pop culture references to trauma or Anna Karenina. Her asides include her description of attending clown school and her children's witty responses to the question, "What does beautiful mean?" - "beautiful means most self" - is especially noteworthy. Beautifully written and both humorous and heartbreaking.
