Book excerpt: Conceptual design is a vital part of the design process during which designers first envision new ideas and then synthesize them into physical configurations that meet certain design specifications. In this research, a computational approach is developed to assist the designers perform this non-trivial task of navigating the design space for creating conceptual design configurations. The methodology is based on combining empirical reverse engineering techniques with a graph-grammar approach. Accordingly, design knowledge is systematically extracted from past designs, formulated as procedural grammar rules, and employed in building new design concepts. The implemented system provides a theoretical framework for automatically searching conceptual design spaces and produces novel alternative configurations to real design problems. The application of the approach to the design of various electromechanical devices shows the method's range of capabilities, and how it serves as a comparison to human conceptual design generation and as a tool to complement the skills of a designer.

Book Synopsis Innovative Conceptual Design by : Ehud Kroll

Download or read book Innovative Conceptual Design written by Ehud Kroll. This book was released on 2001-09-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceptual design, along with need identification and analysis, make up the initial stage of the design process. Conceptual design encompasses the generation of concepts and their integration into system-level solutions, leading to a relatively detailed design. This innovative text is devoted to the crucial initial design stage and focuses on parameter analysis. This methodology helps identify critical issues, or parameters, of the design and proposes configuration-specific solutions. The authors present real-world case studies. The book will appeal to engineering students, as well as to practicing engineers, architects, and product development managers.

Book Synopsis Improving Complex Systems Today by : Daniel D. Frey

Download or read book Improving Complex Systems Today written by Daniel D. Frey. This book was released on 2011-07-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the main theme of Improving Complex Systems Today implies, this book is intended to provide readers with a new perspective on concurrent engineering from the standpoint of systems engineering. It can serve as a versatile tool to help readers to navigate the ever-changing state of this particular field. The primary focus of concurrent engineering was, at first, on bringing downstream information as far upstream as possible by introducing parallel processing in order to reduce time to market and to prevent errors at a later stage which would sometimes cause irrevocable damage. Up to now, numerous new concepts, methodologies and tools have been developed, but over concurrent engineering’s 20-year history the situation has changed extensively. Now, industry has to work in the global marketplace and to cope with diversifying requirements and increasing complexities. Such globalization and diversification necessitate collaboration across different fields and across national boundaries. Thus, the new concurrent engineering calls for a systems approach to gain global market competitiveness. Improving Complex Systems Today provides a new insight into concurrent engineering today.
