Book excerpt: Excerpt from A College Text-Book of Chemistry IN the preparation of this book I have been much encouraged by the cordial reception Which has been given my earlier text-books, both in this country and abroad) While those earlier works are intended to form a series of which the present volume is the most advanced member, it has little in common With the lower mem bers except the general method of treatment. An occa sional paragraph from the Briefer Course has been incorporated, but the two books are quite distinct. In classifying the elements the periodic system has been adopted, and this has been pretty closely adhered to. In order to secure as logical treatment as possible it has been thought best not to give detailed descriptions of apparatus and specific directions for the preparation of substances, in the text proper. By avoiding these the attention can be better directed to the principles involved and a clearer conception of these principles Will be formed, than When the attention is distracted by the reading of such details. Ou the other hand, full descriptions of apparatus and processes Will be found in the Appendix and these, it is believed, Will be of service to the teacher in the lecture-room, as well as to the student in the laboratory. Besides, Physical Chemistry has attained such development that it is well to put a certain part of it in permanent text book form now, for whatsoever changes in our views time may bring, certain ideas we now have will not change. These fundamental ideas I have tried to put into this little book. Of course, I have also included some theories and ideas that later on may have to be rejected. That cannot be helped.
