Book excerpt: How does one speak about kinds in Norwegian? Which noun form should one use to say that dogs bark and cows are mammals? And is it always necessary to use a plural noun form to express genericity? The study presented in this book shows a cognitive approach to genericity in Norwegian. The study material includes three data sets—two surveys and a specialised corpus of generic texts. Both the surveys and the corpus were analysed in two ways—with the use of chosen cognitive models and with a number of statistical tests. Applying both qualitative and quantitive methods has allowed to conduct a comprehensive study on genericity in Norwegian. „The study of Anna Kurek-Przybilski is a comprehensive analysis of genericity in Norwegian. The cognitive approach of the project is combined with other analysis models and the results of statistical tests. The cognitive perspective on generics proposed (and conducted) in the project allows for an interesting analysis of language data, which is additionally supported by the statistical analyses. The study conducted in the project is based on a comprehensive data set. An advantage of the study is that the chosen data focuses on the actual language use and language intuitions, collected through surveys and provided by carefully chosen respondents—native speakers of Norwegian. Moreover, the analyses were based on a set of generic texts chosen particularly for this purpose. The specialised corpus created by the Author was very deliberate, both in terms of text genres (encyclopaedic texts) and the classification of the texts. As a result, the Author was able to use the models proposed by Radden and Radden and Driven, and develop them further to suit the Norwegian language, taking into account its specificity.” From the review by Prof. Agnieszka Gicala

Book Synopsis A Cognitive Approach to Situation Awareness: Theory and Application by : Sébastien Tremblay

Download or read book A Cognitive Approach to Situation Awareness: Theory and Application written by Sébastien Tremblay. This book was released on 2017-03-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of 'situation awareness' (SA) in assessing and predicting operator competence in complex environments has become increasingly apparent in recent years. It has been widely established that SA is a contributing factor to many commercial and military accidents and incidents. Yet determining exactly what constitutes SA is a very difficult task, given the complexity of the construct itself, and the many different processes involved with its acquisition and maintenance. This volume brings together recent developments from researchers and practitioners from around the world who are studying and applying SA from a cognitive perspective. The 41 contributors represent many different theoretical perspectives, research approaches and domains of application. Each chapter has a primary emphasis around one of three main topics - theory, measurement and application and examines the considerable inter-linkage between them. To bring further coherence to the book, all of the contributors received draft manuscripts of those chapters most relevant to their own. Designed to be completely international and interdisciplinary, the authors themselves present varied perspectives from academic departments and industrial organisations from around the world, and from broad applications - with contributions from researchers in the domains of process control, sport, aviation, transportation, and command and control. The readership includes practitioners, academics and researchers within human factors, ergonomics and industrial psychology; Graduate and Undergraduate students specialising within these areas during their final year.

Download or read book Paradigms regained: Theoretical and empirical arguments for the reassessment of the notion of paradigm written by Gabriele Diewald. This book was released on . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume discusses the breadth of applications for an extended notion of paradigm. Paradigms in this sense are not only tools of morphological description but constitute the inherent structure of grammar. Grammatical paradigms are structural sets forming holistic, semiotic structures with an informational value of their own. We argue that as such, paradigms are a part of speaker knowledge and provide necessary structuring for grammaticalization processes. The papers discuss theoretical as well as conceptual questions and explore different domains of grammatical phenomena, ranging from grammaticalization, morphology, and cognitive semantics to modality, aiming to illustrate what the concept of grammatical paradigms can and cannot (yet) explain.
