Book excerpt: 5G and Satellite RF and Optical Integration, the latest ‘hot off the shelf’ groundbreaking book from Artech House authored by subject specialist Geoff Varrall is packed with essential time critical information. This updated edition has everything needed to know in order to understand the new world of terrestrial and non-terrestrial telecom technology. It analyzes the radio spectrum/band and technical specifications under consideration for 5G, along with the related performance, cost, and vertical market expectations. In addition, the book studies the cost of coexistence between 5G operators and other user communities' co-sharing spectrum, including GNSS; radio astronomers; radar; GSO, MEO, and LEO satellites in the Ku, K, and Ka bands and above; and satellite TV. Also covered is the role of free-space optical technology in 5G and satellite networks and what interference issues will arise from new band allocations. This includes co-shared allocations and how interference will be mitigated in and between next generation terrestrial and satellite 5G networks. The publication coincides with an inflection point where terrestrial, nonterrestrial, and RF and optical networks could be integrated in a financially useful way.

Book Synopsis Optical and Wireless Convergence for 5G Networks by : Abdelgader M. Abdalla

Download or read book Optical and Wireless Convergence for 5G Networks written by Abdelgader M. Abdalla. This book was released on 2019-08-05. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobile market has experienced unprecedented growth over the last few decades. Consumer trends have shifted towards mobile internet services supported by 3G and 4G networks worldwide. Inherent to existing networks are problems such as lack of spectrum, high energy consumption, and inter-cell interference. These limitations have led to the emergence of 5G technology. It is clear that any 5G system will integrate optical communications, which is already a mainstay of wide area networks. Using an optical core to route 5G data raises significant questions of how wireless and optical can coexist in synergy to provide smooth, end-to-end communication pathways. Optical and Wireless Convergence for 5G Networks explores new emerging technologies, concepts, and approaches for seamlessly integrating optical-wireless for 5G and beyond. Considering both fronthaul and backhaul perspectives, this timely book provides insights on managing an ecosystem of mixed and multiple access network communications focused on optical-wireless convergence. Topics include Fiber–Wireless (FiWi), Hybrid Fiber-Wireless (HFW), Visible Light Communication (VLC), 5G optical sensing technologies, approaches to real-time IoT applications, Tactile Internet, Fog Computing (FC), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), Software-Defined Networking (SDN), and many others. This book aims to provide an inclusive survey of 5G optical-wireless requirements, architecture developments, and technological solutions.

Book Synopsis Efficient Integration of 5G and Beyond Heterogeneous Networks by : Zi-Yang Wu

Download or read book Efficient Integration of 5G and Beyond Heterogeneous Networks written by Zi-Yang Wu. This book was released on 2020-08-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the smooth integration of optical and RF networks in 5G and beyond (5G+) heterogeneous networks (HetNets), covering both planning and operational aspects. The integration of high-frequency air interfaces into 5G+ wireless networks can relieve the congested radio frequency (RF) bands. Visible light communication (VLC) is now emerging as a promising candidate for future generations of HetNets. Heterogeneous RF-optical networks combine the high throughput of visible light and the high reliability of RF. However, when implementing these HetNets in mobile scenarios, several challenges arise from both planning and operational perspectives. Since the mmWave, terahertz, and visible light bands share similar wave propagation characteristics, the concepts presented here can be broadly applied in all such bands. To facilitate the planning of RF-optical HetNets, the authors present an algorithm that specifies the joint optimal densities of the base stations by drawing on stochastic geometry in order to satisfy the users’ quality-of-service (QoS) demands with minimum network power consumption. From an operational perspective, the book explores vertical handovers and multi-homing using a cooperative framework. For vertical handovers, it employs a data-driven approach based on deep neural networks to predict abrupt optical outages; and, on the basis of this prediction, proposes a reinforcement learning strategy that ensures minimal network latency during handovers. In terms of multi-homing support, the authors examine the aggregation of the resources from both optical and RF networks, adopting a two-timescale multi-agent reinforcement learning strategy for optimal power allocation. Presenting comprehensive planning and operational strategies, the book allows readers to gain an in-depth grasp of how to integrate future coexisting networks at high-frequency bands in a cooperative manner, yielding reliable and high-speed 5G+ HetNets.

Book Synopsis 5G and Satellite Spectrum, Standards, and Scale by : Geoff Varrall

Download or read book 5G and Satellite Spectrum, Standards, and Scale written by Geoff Varrall. This book was released on 2018-05-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new resource presents the emerging role of Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Geostationary satellites (GSO) as a delivery option for backhaul and wide area rural and urban mobile broadband and fixed access. The book offers insight into recently established Non Terrestrial Network standards. Readers learn which bands will need to be supported in next generation 5G and satellite devices and networks and how the bands will be characterized. Channel spacing, guard bands, FDD or TDD, out of band emission limits, and in band performance requirements are discussed. The book discusses what interference issues will arise from new band allocations including co-shared allocations and how interference will be mitigated in and between next generation terrestrial and satellite 5G networks. Readers learn how modulation choices will affect co-existence issues. The book discusses the design, performance, cost, and test implications of integrating next generation satellite physical and MAC layers with Release 16 and 17 5G standards and explores how these emerging spectrum and standards map on to IOT and MTC use cases in specific vertical markets. Readers learn how new active and passive antennas in the K bands and V and W band (E band) impact the satellite link budget and satellite delivery cost economics.
