Book Synopsis 500+ Business English Phrasal Verbs by : Brad Carty

Download or read book 500+ Business English Phrasal Verbs written by Brad Carty. This book was released on 2021-07-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a phrasal verb? A phrasal verb is when you take a verb and add a preposition, but the new combination doesn't mean what either the original verb or preposition mean. So when someone says, "We will bring up that topic at the meeting," it doesn't mean someone is going to carry something upstairs! Instead, the phrasal verb "bring up" means to discuss something. Every language has phrasal verbs, and English has more than 500 related to business topics, so it's very confusing for a person learning English to hear familiar words that suddenly have different meanings when a preposition is added to them. Indeed, mastering phrasal verbs is one of the final steps in fluency, yet they are usually learned only by hearing or reading them and then guessing their meanings through context. The goal of this book is to speed that process along. From the author of "500+ Business English Idioms."

Each of the more than 500 idioms in this book is presented, in alphabetical order, with its meaning and a business example. Recommended for intermediate to advanced English speakers. Download or read book Phrasal Verbs in Business English written by Simona Gomboc. This book was released on 2016. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present thesis deals with the use of phrasal verbs in business English, their meaning as well as their role in the business language. The analysis is based on the course books for business English classes Market Leader. Pre-Intermediate Business English Course Book and Market Leader. Intermediate Business English Course Book. Not until the pre-intermediate level do the learners of English get acquanted with the phenomenon called the phrasal verb, the combination made up of a lexical or single-word verb and an adverbial particle. The main aim of the thesis is to analyse the phrasal verb combinations that cause the most problems to Slovenian learners of English. Those are semi-transparent or semi-idiomatic and non-transparent or highly idiomatic phrasal verbs. The meaning of such verbs cannot be deducted from the meaning of their constituents and because of that they are difficult to understand and/or use. It is even more difficult if such verbal phrases occur in the field of business language, which is special due to its specific phrases. The structure of phrasal verbs and the characteristics of the business language are described in the theoretical part. The empirical part introduces the sources which were used for the analysis. Next is the compiled list of phrasal verbs in alphabetical order, followed by the analysis of the most frequent single-word verbs and the most frequent adverbial particles. A detailed analysis of the idiomatic phrasal verbs rounds off the empirical part.

Book excerpt: This book aims to provide English second language (L2) learners withthe necessary speaking and writing tools in the use of the most frequentbusiness English lexicon. Although it has been written for first language(L1) speakers of Spanish, its use can also be extrapolated to any L2 Englishlearner, regardless of their L1.The present book includes the 100 most common phrasal verbs that anyEnglish speaker needs to be engaged in any oral or written business setting.Phrasal verbs always pose a challenge to L2 English speakers. The merge ofa verb and one or even two particles makes these constituents form a singlelexical and syntactic unit that di ers from the syntax and the semantics ofeach of the constituents individually (e.g. Liao and Fukuya 2002; McCarthyand O'Dell 2004; Trebits 2009; among others). To set an example, the verb"back" and the particle "off " refer to the decision of stopping puttingpressure on someone.
