Book excerpt: 2CO COmmunicating COmplexity is the international design conference aiming at exploring languages, approaches and technologies to respond to the emerging need for making complex information accessible throught design. 2CO’s first edition (25-26 October 2013, Alghero, Italy) has gathered an international community of professionals and scholars active in this area to share experiences, points of views and methodologies, focusing on three main areas of interest: informative-animation, interactive data visualization, info-graphics. This volume collects their contributions in the three conference categories: full papers, posters and ‘junior track’ special session. Generated by a consortium of European Universities that in 2011 started collaborating on the InformAnimation project, and by fellow Universities active in visual design teaching and research, COmmunicating COmplexity aims at becoming an international reference point for research and education in the area of communicating complexity through new media.

Book Synopsis Advances in Design and Digital Communication III by : Nuno Martins

Download or read book Advances in Design and Digital Communication III written by Nuno Martins. This book was released on 2022-10-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on research findings and practical lessons featuring advances in the areas of digital and interaction design, graphic design and branding, design education, society and communication in design practice, and related ones. Gathering the proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Digital Design and Communication, Digicom 2022, held on November 3–5, 2022, as an hybrid event, from Barcelos, Portugal, and continuing the tradition of the previous book, it describes new design strategies and solutions to foster digital communication within and between the society, institutions and brands. By highlighting innovative ideas and reporting on multidisciplinary projects, it offers a source of inspiration for designers of all kinds, including graphic and web designers, UI, UX and social media designers, and to researchers, advertisers, artists, and brand and corporate communication managers alike.

Book Synopsis Communication Complexity and Parallel Computing by : Juraj Hromkovič

Download or read book Communication Complexity and Parallel Computing written by Juraj Hromkovič. This book was released on 2013-03-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The communication complexity of two-party protocols is an only 15 years old complexity measure, but it is already considered to be one of the fundamen tal complexity measures of recent complexity theory. Similarly to Kolmogorov complexity in the theory of sequential computations, communication complex ity is used as a method for the study of the complexity of concrete computing problems in parallel information processing. Especially, it is applied to prove lower bounds that say what computer resources (time, hardware, memory size) are necessary to compute the given task. Besides the estimation of the compu tational difficulty of computing problems the proved lower bounds are useful for proving the optimality of algorithms that are already designed. In some cases the knowledge about the communication complexity of a given problem may be even helpful in searching for efficient algorithms to this problem. The study of communication complexity becomes a well-defined indepen dent area of complexity theory. In addition to a strong relation to several funda mental complexity measures (and so to several fundamental problems of com plexity theory) communication complexity has contributed to the study and to the understanding of the nature of determinism, nondeterminism, and random ness in algorithmics. There already exists a non-trivial mathematical machinery to handle the communication complexity of concrete computing problems, which gives a hope that the approach based on communication complexity will be in strumental in the study of several central open problems of recent complexity theory.

Book Synopsis Making Sense of Field Research by : Sheila Pontis

Download or read book Making Sense of Field Research written by Sheila Pontis. This book was released on 2018-07-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to use field research to bring essential people-centred insights to your information design projects. Information design is recognized as the practice of making complex data and information understandable for a particular audience, but what’s often overlooked is the importance of understanding the audience themselves during the information design process. Rather than rely on intuition or assumptions, information designers need evidence gathered from real people about how they think, feel, and behave in order to inform the design of effective solutions. To do this, they need field research. If you’re unsure about field research and how it might fit into a project, this book is for you. This text presents practical, easy-to-follow instructions for planning, designing, and conducting a field study, as well as guidance for making sense of field data and translating findings into action. The selection of established methods and techniques, drawn from social sciences, anthropology, and participatory design, is geared specifically toward information design problems. Over 80 illustrations and five real-world case studies bring key principles and methods of field research to life. Whether you are designing a family of icons or a large-scale signage system, an instruction manual or an interactive data visualization, this book will guide you through the necessary steps to ensure you are meeting people’s needs.
