Book excerpt: "Three months after Hitler's storm troopers marched into Poland on September 1, 1939, Ian Stuart Menzies was called from his job as an embryo reporter on the Glasgow Herald to become an embryo midshipman in the Royal Navy. His service took him from the Shetland Islands to the West Indies, to Africa's Belgian Congo; from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, from Dakar to Malta and then to Algiers, and on five different ships, three of them destroyers. He took part in the landings in North African [sic], Sicily, Italy and on D-Day in Normandy... His first visit to the United States was in 1943 to take over as executive officer of H.M.S. Stayner then being built at the Hingham Shipyard. The second visit in 1945 was to become British Naval Information Officer in New York City and to marry Barbara Newton of Hingham, Massachusetts, whom he had met at the shipyard on his first visit. The marriage took place in the oldest church of public worship in continuous service in the United States - The Old Ship Church in Hingham on June 16, 1945."--p. [4] cover.

Book Synopsis Down to a Sunset Sea by : Saif Rahman

Download or read book Down to a Sunset Sea written by Saif Rahman. This book was released on 2006. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When fifty is the new thirty what should fiftysomethings look forward to under OurGov? Respect when it's due? Respect when it's choked out of you, more likely. Yes it's true: they really are conspiring against us. And not just OurGov. Folk proudly calling themselves 'Oligarchs' (easier to pronounce than 'Kleptocrat'). Saxons wanting to link up with their Anglo-Saxon cousins. Austrians feeling ostalgie and wanting their imperial influence back. What's not legislated for isn't allowed. OurGov will provide. And if can't it'll explain why you didn't really need it in the first place. Scant consolation that if anything does go wrong, it'll never be your fault. So the vigilantsias arise. Standing up for fathers' rights and quieter Sundays. For better spoken English. Against scruffy clothes. Against the Beachhead volleyball of OurGov and its corporative vision. And in the Blogosphere thousands can see you scream.

Book Synopsis How Churchill Waged War by : Allen Packwood

Download or read book How Churchill Waged War written by Allen Packwood. This book was released on 2018-10-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical investigation into Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s decision-making process during every stage of World War II. When Winston Churchill accepted the position of Prime Minister in May 1940, he insisted in also becoming Minister of Defence. This, though, meant that he alone would be responsible for the success or failure of Britain’s war effort. It also meant that he would be faced with many monumental challenges and utterly crucial decisions upon which the fate of Britain and the free world rested. With the limited resources available to the UK, Churchill had to pinpoint where his country’s priorities lay. He had to respond to the collapse of France, decide if Britain should adopt a defensive or offensive strategy, choose if Egypt and the war in North Africa should take precedence over Singapore and the UK’s empire in the East, determine how much support to give the Soviet Union, and how much power to give the United States in controlling the direction of the war. In this insightful investigation into Churchill’s conduct during the Second World War, Allen Packwood, BA, MPhil (Cantab), FRHistS, the Director of the Churchill Archives Centre, enables the reader to share the agonies and uncertainties faced by Churchill at each crucial stage of the war. How Churchill responded to each challenge is analyzed in great detail and the conclusions Packwood draws are as uncompromising as those made by Britain’s wartime leader as he negotiated his country through its darkest days.
