I have regrets of which I seldom speak, nor too often think. For me, danger became a way of lifean accepted facet in the natural order of things. There is no bravado in wearing a gunit was, at the time, a necessity of life. A man could no more survive without a weapon than he could live without a horse or food. I was fourteen years old when they attacked me under cover of darkness and while I was in my own home. The only weapon I owned was a big, double-barreled eight-gauge shotgun that we used for small game and varmints; so, the night they came I killed my first two men with a borrowed pistol. That started my crusade. My search for justice, or maybe it was only for justification, led to more men joining the first two. Soon after, I began to acquire an unwanted and I felt, undeserved reputation as a gunman. I did not want to shoot peopleexcept one, I truly wanted to shoot him. But the others kept coming for me and I had wrongs to right. In the end, I hunted them.

Book Synopsis Waiting for the Barbarians by : J. M. Coetzee

Download or read book Waiting for the Barbarians written by J. M. Coetzee. This book was released on 2017-01-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern classic by Nobel Laureate J.M. Coetzee. His latest novel, The Schooldays of Jesus, is now available from Viking. Late Essays: 2006-2016 will be available January 2018. For decades the Magistrate has been a loyal servant of the Empire, running the affairs of a tiny frontier settlement and ignoring the impending war with the barbarians. When interrogation experts arrive, however, he witnesses the Empire's cruel and unjust treatment of prisoners of war. Jolted into sympathy for their victims, he commits a quixotic act of rebellion that brands him an enemy of the state. J. M. Coetzee's prize-winning novel is a startling allegory of the war between opressor and opressed. The Magistrate is not simply a man living through a crisis of conscience in an obscure place in remote times; his situation is that of all men living in unbearable complicity with regimes that ignore justice and decency. Mark Rylance (Wolf Hall, Bridge of Spies), Ciro Guerra and producer Michael Fitzgerald are teaming up to to bring J.M. Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians to the big screen.

Book Synopsis Waiting for Zoë by : James R. Ament

Download or read book Waiting for Zoë written by James R. Ament. This book was released on 2013-09-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A sweeping novel of love and loss, city and country, growing old and staying young. Waiting for Zoë is a thoughtful look at the ability of grown men and young women to confront change and absorb life's most challenging moments," writes Mark Stevens, author of Antler Dust: An Allison Coil Mystery. Waiting for Zoë is a genre-bending character driven, mainstream novel that explores a person’s ability to endure in the face of tragedy—and love. James R. Ament says, “It’s a love story, but it’s not a romance. There are underlying religious themes, but it’s not a philosophical book. There’s a little political commentary here and there, but it’s not about politics. It explores some very serious themes, but there are light moments and humor, too.” Set in Wyoming, Colorado, New York City, and Southern California, it makes the reader ask the hard question: who is in charge of creating ourselves? Ament says, “I had this story in mind about a young person who apparently has everything going for her, but then her life falls apart. The question is: Does she get it back? And if so, how?” And from writer Stephen Knapp, Evergreen Newspapers. “The characters are sharply defined and appealing, and the dialogue flows smoothly and moves the narrative along at a comfortable pace. The settings and situations are neither contrived nor trite, and the conflicts are at once challenging and accessible. In short, there’s nothing within Waiting for Zoë that marks its author as a newcomer to the literary stage,”(Reprinted with permission of Evergreen Newspapers).
