Book Synopsis Tools and Tactics of Design by : Peter G. Dominick

Download or read book Tools and Tactics of Design written by Peter G. Dominick. This book was released on 2001. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text uses an integrated and interactive set of materials to teach students about the process of engineering design. Using a very strong engineering context and providing an experiential resource, this material exposes students to the cognitive and interpersonal skills required to execute the design process and introduces them to some of the productivity tools used by engineers. Phases of the design process are covered, which reflect the new ABET accreditation criteria. These areas include Defining the Problem, Formulating Solutions, Developing Models and Prototypes and Presenting the Design. Topics on Decision-Making, Communication, Collaboration and Self-Management are also presented, in order for students to learn how these various skills are best applied to each phase of the design process. Suitable for a freshman/sophomore Introductory Design course, Dominick's book can also be used for some upper-level design courses. The text is meant to support student work on a variety of design projects regardless of engineering discipline.

Book Synopsis Models, Methods and Tools for Product Service Design by : Laura Cattaneo

Download or read book Models, Methods and Tools for Product Service Design written by Laura Cattaneo. This book was released on 2018-08-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book summarizes research being pursued within the Manutelligence project, the goal of which is to help enterprises develop smart, social and flexible products with high value added services. Manutelligence has improved Product and Service Design by developing suitable models and methods, and connecting them through a modular, collaborative and secure ICT Platform. The use of real data collected in real time by Internet of Things (IoT) technologies underpins the design of product-service systems and makes it possible to monitor them throughout their life cycle. Available data allows costs and sustainability issues to be more accurately measured and simulated in the form of Life Cycle Cost (LCC) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Analysing data from IoT systems and sharing LCC and LCA information via the ICT Platform can help to accelerate the design of product-service systems, reduce costs and better understand customer needs. Industrial partners involved in Manutelligence provide a clear overview of the project’s outcomes, and demonstrate how its technological solutions can be used to improve the design of product-service systems and the management of product-service life cycles.

Book excerpt: Architects today must position themselves within an extremely wide-ranging field of qualifications. This makes it all the more important to have a fresh introduction to the field that makes up one of their core competences, the field of design. This introductory presentation describes and analyzes the theories, strategies, and tools of creative design for the purposes of practical work. With thoughtfulness and expertise, it opens the reader’s eyes to the processes that underlie design and demonstrates different ways of communicating about complex design work. The first section focuses on the much-discussed relationship between design and research, between architecture and the sciences. The second section describes basic design approaches, from Vitruvius and Alberti through Erwin Panofsky and Wolfgang Kemp to Otl Aicher and Vilém Flusser. The third and largest section presents the elementary tools of design, from gestures and words through drawings, models, and simulations to critique, all as instruments of creative design in architecture and its related fields.
