It stimulates the proper decomposition of the organic matter in the soil, neutralizes acids in the soil, improves tho physical condition of heavy soils, supplies lime to growing plants, or makes available other elements in the soil. The great majority of the soils of the East, South and portions of the Central West are deficient in lime and will respond in increased yields to applications of lime. In the following pages information is presented regarding the materials used in liming their preparation and use, as well as a discussion of the chemical changes brought about in the soil by lime, so far as they are known. The relative merits of different forms of lime are discussed and data furnished whereby the value of any particular form of lime for agricultural purposes may be determined approximately.
