Book Synopsis Finding a Way in International Development by : Sarah Parkinson

Download or read book Finding a Way in International Development written by Sarah Parkinson. This book was released on 2013. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development workers face different levels of influence on their work. Social and political influences work at the broadest level, shaping governmental and multilateral policies about what international development should do and why and how it should be funded. Institutional and inter-institutional policy, culture and practice give rise to the immediate working environment, varying from agency to agency. Aid workers themselves bring a set of understandings about aid, development and the nature of their own roles. By stepping back and engaging in reflective practice, workers can deepen their understanding of these factors and decide which they can usefully harness, which they may be able to change, and which they must work within or around. This is precisely what Sarah Parkinson does in her examination of the development enterprise. Based on the author’s own experiences as an aid worker and supplemented by interviews with over 150 development practitioners who collectively have over 2,000 years of experience in over 130 countries, Something Bigger than Ourselves answers questions about professional identity in the ethically challenging field of international development. Filled with illustrative examples from a wide range of contexts, the book addresses head-on the concerns of many working in or considering careers in international development about whether their actions will be beneficial, ineffectual or even harmful.

Book Synopsis Reforming the International Financial System for Development by : Jomo Kwame Sundaram

Download or read book Reforming the International Financial System for Development written by Jomo Kwame Sundaram. This book was released on 2011-01-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1944 Bretton Woods conference created new institutions for international economic governance. Though flawed, the system led to a golden age in postwar reconstruction, sustained economic growth, job creation, and postcolonial development. Yet financial liberalization since the 1970s has involved deregulation and globalization, which have exacerbated instability, rather than sustained growth. In addition, the failure of Bretton Woods to provide a reserve currency enabled the dollar to fill the void, which has contributed to periodic, massive U.S. trade deficits. Our latest global financial crisis, in which all these weaknesses played a part, underscores how urgently we must reform the international financial system. Prepared for the G24 research program, a consortium of developing countries focused on financial issues, this volume argues that such reforms must be developmental. Chapters review historical trends in global liquidity, financial flows to emerging markets, and the food crisis, identifying the systemic flaws that contributed to the recent downturn. They challenge the effectiveness of recent policy and suggest criteria for regulatory reform, keeping in mind the different circumstances, capacities, and capabilities of various economies. Essays follow ongoing revisions in international banking standards, the improved management of international capital flows, the critical role of the World Trade Organization in liberalizing and globalizing financial services, and the need for international tax cooperation. They also propose new global banking and reserve currency arrangements.

Book Synopsis Digital Senegal for Inclusive Growth by : Marcio Cruz

Download or read book Digital Senegal for Inclusive Growth written by Marcio Cruz. This book was released on 2022-05-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senegal, like all African countries, needs better and more jobs for its growing population. The main message of Digital Senegal for Inclusive Growth is that broader use of productivity-enhancing technologies by households and enterprises can generate such jobs, including for lower-skilled people. Adoption of better technologies can support both Senegal’s short-term objective of economic recovery and its vision of economic transformation with more inclusive growth. But this is not automatic. This book leverages a novel survey instrument that measures adoption of technologies at the firm level. Results from this survey show that there is a large average technological gap in Senegal relative to firms in Brazil, in the range of 36 and 30 percent for extensive (whether firms use it at all) and intensive (the most frequently applied) uses of better technologies such as for business administration. Except for a small number of firms, enterprises still mostly use manual, analog technologies to perform general and sector specific business functions. Micro-size informal enterprises lag even further. The benefits from technology adoption are significant. Digital technologies are an enabler of economy-wide productivity and jobs growth by catalyzing adoption of complementary technologies, including many not accessible without digital infrastructure. For households, mobile internet coverage is associated with 14 percent higher total consumption, as well as a 10 percent lower extreme poverty rate—and jobs with higher earnings. Firms with better technologies have higher levels of productivity, generate more jobs, and increase the share of lower-skilled workers on their payroll, on average: an increase in technological sophistication across general business functions that the firm uses most intensively, such as using standard software rather than writing by hand for business administration, is associated with a 14 percent higher jobs growth rate. For these and other inclusive growth benefits to be realized, Senegal should focus on ensuring availability of affordable digital infrastructure and implementing targeted incentives to promote use by firms of better technologies as well as policies to narrow deepening digital divides across enterprises and households.
